🌍✨ Today, on Human Rights Day 2024, I had the privilege of speaking at a webinar hosted by the Human Rights and Coercion Reduction Committee. This year’s theme, Equality, emphasises the importance of dignity, fairness, and respect for everyone, particularly those at the greatest risk of discrimination. The discussions focused on: - The difference between equality (in the eyes of the law) and equity, and why addressing systemic barriers is essential. - The role of lived experience leadership in transforming culture and embedding rights-based practices in mental health care. - How tools like the Human Rights Analysis Tool are driving change within mental health services in South Australia. I was joined by a fantastic panel, including: - Jenny Singh, who shared her lived experience to highlight the importance of supportive decision-making in mental health treatment. - Dr John Brayley, who addressed the barriers and enablers to embedding human rights in mental health services. - Camilo Guaqueta, who shared examples of effective rights-based programs and their impact. The enthusiasm and thoughtful questions from participants demonstrated how important this work is. While South Australia doesn’t yet have a formal Human Rights Act, today’s session reinforced the value of advocating for one and ensuring that human rights principles remain at the forefront of mental health care. 📢 “Where do human rights begin? In small places, close to home.” – Eleanor Roosevelt #HumanRightsDay #Equality #MentalHealthRights #HumanRightsInAction

International Day of Justice: Advocating for Fairness and Equality July 17th marks International Day of Justice, a day dedicated to promoting justice, the rule of law, and the fight against impunity for crimes that threaten peace and security. This day commemorates the adoption of the Rome Statute in 1998, which established the International Criminal Court (ICC), a cornerstone in the global pursuit of justice as well as every day access to rights we may take for granted. Why does it matter? The International Day of Justice is a reminder of the critical importance of legal frameworks that protect human rights and uphold justice worldwide. It emphasizes the need for robust legal systems that can effectively address crimes such as genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and aggression. We can’t always make a huge global impact on justice but we can all make improvements in our environment and communities. I’ve always had a social justice inner warrior that guides my moral compass and that means in my work and world I want to ensure and endorse equality equity and inclusion and therefore justice. In my everyday work I want everyone to have access to to good mental health as well physical health, equality of opportunity, less people living ostracised because of their mental illness, people being supported to live in the community with their disabilities, fairer opportunities and the ability to thrive regardless of of your circumstances. There are always things we can do to make our communities and workplace better, safer and more inclusive and equitable. I want everyone to have a seat at the table. But more than that it’s not just about inviting people to the party. When you get people at the party you need to make sure everyone is also invited to dance. If you are merely having people standing around awkwardly while others dance it’s really not inclusion or justice. So reflect on the progress the world has made, but acknowledge the challenges ahead as there is it still so much to do when it comes to justice and pariety and let’s unite in the pursuit of global justice in every way and for all. #globaljustice #community #inclusion #justicewarriors ——————————————— I’m Elizabeth a disabled #livedexperience #mentalhealth #trainer policy analyst and writer who wants community and independent living to work for everyone. 🌍 International Human Rights Day 2024 🌍 Today, we join people around the world in recognising International Human Rights Day, a reminder of the universal rights that belong to every person - dignity, equality, and freedom. As we reflect on this year’s theme, “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All,” it’s an opportunity to consider how we can uphold these values in our workplaces, communities, and daily lives. In the agricultural sector, where I spend much of my time, human rights come alive through: ✅ Ensuring safe and fair working conditions for all. ✅ Supporting mental health and well-being. ✅ Championing the rights of rural communities. Let’s commit to building a world where these fundamental rights are respected, no matter where we live or work. #HumanRightsDay #DignityFreedomJustice #FarmSafety #EquityAndInclusion #VictoriaFarms

Did you know that South Australia has one of the highest rates of involuntary treatment in the world? It’s time for change. We’re proud to support the Rights Resource Network’s call for a Human Rights Act for South Australia. This act is crucial to ending stigma, restrictive practices, and human rights violations in mental health care. Change starts with us. Together, we can create a future where compassion and human rights are at the heart of mental health care. Today, on Human Rights Day, we reflect on this year’s powerful theme: Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now. Human rights are the foundation of a just, equitable, and sustainable world. They empower individuals, protect the most vulnerable, and enable communities to thrive. Yet, many continue to face systemic inequality, discrimination, and the denial of their basic rights. At Aide à l'Enfance de l'Inde et du Népal (AEIN), we are committed to working alongside marginalized communities to defend human rights and promote justice, equality, and dignity for all. The time to act is now—because the choices we make today determine the future we leave behind. Together, we can build a world where everyone’s rights are respected and upheld. #HumanRightsDay #OurRightsOurFuture #ActNow #JusticeForAll #Solidarity
