The Journal of a Social Enterprise - Day 21
The Turnaround of Dignity
About Hong Kong
3. The Peak
There is a Chinese term in Hong Kong that is unique to Hong Kong and not to any of the Chinese speaking community in Taiwan or China. The word is "吉铺" pronounced "Kat Poi", meaning shop that are empty and looking to sell or rent out. Technically the shop should be called "空铺" pronounced "Kon Poi" or "empty shop" but the sound in Cantonese "空" sounds the same as "凶" meaning ghostly or horror. This is the beauty of Cantonese dialect.
Which bring me to the Peak.
The Peak is one of the most popular tourist place in Hong Kong. Tourists from China, India and South East Asia and is a must visit Victoria Peak. It is a long drive up and likewise for the trams.
At the moment Hong Kong has many "吉铺" including Victoria Peak. We have opportunity to take one unit, a small space. We are offered a site to do a Dignity Kitchenette like Singapore selling bento box meal. The current retail market in Hong Kong is very bad and landlord are looking for ideas to regenerate their mall.
Still thinking whether this idea of supplying bento boxes (veg and non veg), for this tourists is viable opportunity.
4. Events
As shared in earlier writing, we have five revenue sources and event is one of the main earner for us. For the last one year, we work hard to come up with new ideas
- Durian Party with durians from Malaysia direct. Fresh Mou Shan Wang Durians. There are many durian lovers who willing to pay for good durians.
- Corporate parties held at Dignity Kitchen. Given the space we have in Dignity Kitchen, company hosts their events in a social enterprise. DHL, Chow Tai Fook, German society with SOCO and more.
- Culinary classes for youth. A one day activities from visit to the wet market, cooking for lunch and packing / distributing meal boxes for the poor in Mongkok. Combining culinary with social good.
- The Father's Day forum play, working with Hong Kong's Dad's Network https://lnkd.in/gBv8Cg35 A charity with the focus on Fathers in Hong Kong. This is a play I wrote many years ago which was playout in Dignity Kitchen Singapore. Using the play to raise fund through the use of Dignity Kitchen as a play site and at the same time educating the public. The play will happen in mid 2025 and hope will continue as a revenue source for Dignity Kitchen Hong Kong.
- The Little Red Book is a Chinese App which is the popular with the increasing number of Chinese tourist visiting Hong Kong and the publicity of Dignity Kitchen is working. Not tourists but schools and NGO's in China.
Doing nothing and waiting for the market to turn for the better is never an option. How successful will these revenue source be, I don't have a crystal ball. Just have to keep pounding together with the team.
Next is about reducing cost....
