Guardians of the Earth: Investing in Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities – #AVPN2024 #OneAsiaOneFuture Moderated by Liz Gillies, Menzies Foundation, CEO, this important session will explore the essential contributions of Indigenous Peoples in addressing global climate challenges, focusing on areas like reforestation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable land management. Indigenous communities, while representing less than 5% of the global population, are the guardians of 80% of the world’s biodiversity. This session aims to address the challenges in funnelling climate finance to these frontline defenders against climate change. With a lens on the importance of investing in Indigenous-led initiatives for sustainability, insights into Asia's climate funding landscape, and investment opportunities that support both environmental and women's economic empowerment. Panellists include: • Kevin Currey, Program Officer, Ford Foundation • Antoinette (Nonette) Royo, Executive Director, The International Land and Forest Tenure Facility • H.E. Razan Al Mubarak, Managing Director, Species Conservation Fund The session will equip philanthropists and private-sector funders with the necessary tools to overcome barriers that prevent effective climate finance from reaching Indigenous communities, highlighting successful models of engagement that ensure both environmental sustainability and socio-economic benefits for these vital yet underserved groups. Get involved We encourage active participation and insightful dialogues to co-design solutions that foster resilient and thriving ecosystems through empowered Indigenous stewardship. #ClimateAction #IndigenousLeadership #BiodiversityConservation #SustainableInvesting #AVPN2024

The Chorus Foundation recently closed out its final year of grantmaking. Their Founder and President, and winner of the 2023 EGA Risk Taker Award, Farhad Ebrahimi, reflects on how confronting and defining power led to the Foundation's decision to sunset. "Revisiting our journey at Chorus, we can see a clear path through the following stages: holding power accountably to sharing power equitably to handing over power entirely, with each step contributing the necessary preconditions for the next." https://lnkd.in/eZVEhfZX #SocialImpact #Philanthropy #JustTransition #SpendDown

✨ Join us for an upcoming webinar! ✨ Register now: https://lnkd.in/dzH_sVn6 Philanthropy has faced its fair share of critiques, with important questions being raised about philanthropic wealth and how decision-making structures are far removed from the communities it supports. Despite their direct role and impact in biodiversity conservation and climate mitigation, less than 2.9% of philanthropic funding reaches Indigenous and local communities directly. Unlike previous efforts to ‘shift power’ by including Indigenous Peoples in decision-making, Indigenous-led funds represent an even deeper example of shifting decision-making directly into the hands of social movements. What are the challenges and opportunities to this method of shifting power?

ICYMI: Effective climate philanthropy is easier with Giving Green and Charity Navigator. Thanks to Nonprofit Quarterly for stimulating this optimistic conversation with Michael Thatcher and Giving Green founder Daniel Stein.
You've heard about the sharp drop in prices for solar panels and batteries. Ever wonder what's next? At Giving Green, we believe strategic donors and smart climate giving can make the next big thing happen. Our recommended nonprofits "are thinking about what are the breakthroughs that need to happen and what does government have to do to make the breakthrough happen? What does private sector have to do? And then what is the role of nonprofits? Maybe it’s advocating differently, maybe it’s coordinating the private sector, but it’s these system-level changes that will allow these new markets to come into place." Giving Green founder Daniel Stein and Charity Navigator CEO Michael Thatcher recently spoke to Nonprofit Quarterly about some reasons for hope in the climate fight: https://lnkd.in/e_Zi-xjF

🌍✨ International Day of Climate Action ✨🌍 Today, on International Day of Climate Action, we stand united with communities around the world to combat the effects of climate change. At the Made Better Together Foundation, we are committed to helping marginalized communities not only adapt to the changing climate but also thrive despite its challenges. One of the ways we are taking action is through the donation of shade sails—providing much-needed cool, shaded spaces where communities can gather, children can play, and people can find relief from the increasingly harsh heat. ☀️🏞️ In celebration of this important day, we are excited to announce that we have two special projects lined up! While the installations will take place in the next couple of weeks, these shade sails represent a tangible step toward mitigating climate risks and building resilience within these communities. Climate action is more than just words—it's about taking meaningful steps to create a sustainable future for all, and we are proud to be part of the solution. 🌱💧 Stay tuned for updates on these projects as we continue our journey toward #ClimateResilience and #CommunityEmpowerment. Together, we can make a lasting impact! 💚 #InternationalDayOfClimateAction #MadeBetterTogether #ForTheWild #ShadeSailsForClimate #ClimateActionNow #Sustainability #EcoFriendly #Philanthropy #ClimateChangeIsReal #MitigatingClimateRisks #NonProfit #ResilientCommunities #TenthouseStructures #CommunityFirst #SustainableFuture #NextGenLeaders #CompassionInAction #TenthouseStructures
