To become a Top 1% engineer, the path is actually quite straightforward: Surround yourself with engineers who are better than you. Enjoy being the dumbest person in the room. If you're kind to others and cherish feedback as a gift, those smarter than you will teach you their ways. From there, you will quickly become the smartest person in the room. At that point, find a new room where you're dumb again and repeat the process. This is surprisingly difficult for engineers as so many of them can't push aside their own ego. But if you can win that battle, you'll grow faster than everybody else. To get to the Top 1%, you must be comfortable being in the bottom 1%.

This is a classic example of survivorship bias used as an attempt to artificially create external validity (and why engineers should probably stay in their lane when it comes to making empirical claims about domains with which they're clearly unfamiliar or actually learn the concepts from the referenced domains)...where are the empirics showing such an approach actually produces the alleged outcomes?

The most important thing a senior engineer can do is to mentor more junior folks and help them become senior engineers.

Yesterday I sat down with Santosh Mahendra, Lisa Gumerman, John Collins & Amrita Jain as we discussed strategies to keep engineers motivated and morale high despite what is happening in the market. Some key takeaways from the discussion: - Lead with empathy and acknowledge that we are all in this together. - When it comes to low morale, look out for the tell tale signs, build trust with your team and celebrate the small wins. - The human element is critical. - Be open, be honest and go by your mission statement and values. A recording will be published next week so stay tuned!
