I may not be travelling to the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety myself but I am involved in this preparation webinar on 23 January, hosted by the SADC Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety. Please register! Key speakers from the World Health Organization's Africa office, the African Union and the SADC Secretariat will outline the aims and importance of the Conference taking place in Marrakech on 18-19 February 2025. 🌍 🌍 🌍 🌍 🌍 🌍 Almost halfway through the 2nd Global Decade of Action on Road Safety, the world is not on track to halve road deaths and serious injuries by 2030. Africa is burdened with the highest death rate, despite having the lowest proportion of motorized vehicles, and the cost of crashes significantly hinders the continent's development. The Marrakech Conference aims to radically shift the needle on this situation, with the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety in attendance to amplify the voice of civil society.

Road traffic crashes place a burden on our societies and young people and are one of the leading man-made epidemics diverting resources from critical healthcare needs. Engaging young people in the design, implementation, and evaluation of road safety policies is crucial, as outlined in the Global Plan of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030. Youth have a significant role to play in shaping the future of transportation for two main reasons. Firstly, they are disproportionately affected by road accidents, with road traffic crashes being the leading cause of death among individuals aged 5–29. Secondly, they are the ones who will inherit the consequences of today’s decisions regarding transportation safety. Active involvement of young people promotes a sense of ownership and responsibility, fostering a culture of compliance with road safety measures. Moreover, young people hold influence within their peer groups, making them effective advocates for responsible behavior and safety awareness. Recognizing the critical importance of youth health and well-being, urgent action is needed to invest in road safety measures, promote active mobility, and ensure meaningful youth participation in policymaking processes. How can governments and companies providing mental health apps work together to protect patients in a post-COVID digital world? To answer this question, the WEF and Deloitte have created a policy framework and toolkit. It is intended to guide lawmakers on successful strategies related to technology and mental health. The toolkit will be used by several groups: - Governments and regulators Encouraging government health authorities and regulators to test and adopt principles that promote the safe, ethical and trustworthy implementation of digital mental health services in their respective jurisdictions. - Healthcare, insurance and investors Enable understanding of the core components that need to be considered to evaluate, build and integrate high-quality digital mental health services. - Digital mental health innovators and companies Provide a roadmap for digital mental health innovators and companies to create trustworthy services. - Consumers and Communities Improving access to services that enable people around the world to achieve their desired emotional, social and psychological potential.

Our study regarding plate waste and its correlates in Lebanese hospitals is now published in "Scientific Reports". It explores the amount of plate waste in Lebanese hospitals (based on governorates and areas, meal timing, hospital wards, food groups, and in general), the level of patients' satisfaction, and the determinants of plate waste. Today, I returned to one of my favorite places in Lisbon: the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. This time, instead of attending a cultural program, I had the opportunity to hear about public health from the military. Yes, military personnel are deeply concerned about health— perhaps even more than some of us in the health sector. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the military provided invaluable lessons on planning and acting swiftly, accurately, and equitably. Here are some key takeaways from today: - The dichotomy between civilians and the military is a false one—we are all part of the same society. - While we are good at crisis management, we must improve our readiness to act before crises escalate. - Preparedness and prompt action are essential. - Collaboration between the military and civilian sectors exists, but more robust legislation is needed to strengthen this partnership. - Power comes with responsibility, and responsibility cannot be assumed without the necessary authority. I look forward to learning more from the military — not only about defense, the International Health Regulations, and Public Health Emergency Preparedness, but also about leadership, strategic planning, and political negotiation. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in the IV Jornadas Defesa + Saúde: Colaboração Civil-Militar no contexto da Segurança Sanitária Mundial.
