Another great F1 race, and another demonstration of how leadership from the top, with a clear understanding of how to deliver on your goals, makes all the difference!! In Mercedes case, they've tripped up again! Last week, the talk was all about how McLaren enforced team orders to favour the driver in front. Mercedes took a different route, and allowed their drivers to race. Thanks to Russell's strategy enabling him to move from 5th to 1st through the pit stops, Hamilton was left gob smacked that as the lead driver (in the race) he'd been out 'strategied' by his own team! In terms of performance progress, Mercedes have show great form, in terms of in race strategy and delivery, their 'non action' was more costly in the end that McLaren Racings action in the previous week! What a race, the drama firmly shifted from McLaren Racing to Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team this weekend! Mercedes, who looked to have taken the whole paddock by surprise with an unlikely 1-2 win, found themselves in disarray when they'd not taken care of the technical stuff on race day, leading to Russell being disqualified. Here's what they got wrong: Russell, in the last few laps, opted to battle with Hamilton for the win, with Russell being on very worn tyres (and it seems not enough weight in them). The extra fuel used in this late battle could have made all the difference! Unlike most tracks, there is no 'in-lap' at Spa, you finish and drive straight into the pits. Normally, F1 drivers have a whole lap to drive over all the dirty rubber fragments around the track, adding weight back into their tyres, to maximise the weight of the car, this wasn't available at Spa. So ultimately, Russell did pull an absolute blinder, but the team didn't look after him. Hamilton, who had fought and led the race until his 2nd pit stop cut a dejected character to finish 2nd behind his team mate Russell at the end of the race. Russell, who was running in 5th, opted to skip his second pit stop and run to the end on old tyres. Hamilton caught Russell again on fresher tyres, but Russell managed to keep him at bay. Will Norris never get a championship? Watching Norris race in #F1 at Silverstone last year was immense, the crowds cheered him every lap as he was the only one keeping the RedBull of Verstappen honest. A very likeable and marketable bloke, always smiling, great for the McLaren Racing brand, but … There are two factors that affect his future potential achievements: 1) He has committed long term to McLaren, which is ultimately a gamble. A betting person would put McLaren a steady 4th place team, fighting it out for 3rd in the constructors every year. They had a great season last year, but let’s not forget that Scuderia Ferrari and Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team had a poor year really. This makes a drivers championship hard to achieve for any McLaren Racing driver. 2) Does Lando Norris have that extra little bit, that GOAT potential, that determination to put his car in front when it’s a tight race, taking the risk of losing it all whilst going for the win? In race trim over the last few seasons both Lando and Charles Leclerc have shown a lot of respect to Max Verstapen, maybe a little too much. No one doubts whether Max has the determination, but watching Norris, he is a great racer, lovely bloke, but maybe, just lacking the bite to win?
