From scrap to new raw material ♻ We are leading a consortium project called Car2Car, which focuses on advancing the automotive circular economy. Through innovative dismantling and automated sorting techniques, we aim to significantly increase the utilization of valuable resources in the production of new vehicles in the future. The circular economy of the automotive industry will definitely make the world a greener place. Perhaps, the real answer to sustainability lies in reusing existing materials with more efficient engines, be it electric, combustion or hybrid.

The HIF is part of this project and contributes its expertise in material recognition using spectroscopy-based #sensor technology together with efficient data processing solutions. Through improved #recycling products, the Car2Car project aims to increase the proportion of secondary materials in new vehicles as a prerequisite for closing material loops in a #CircularEconomy. "Metals and plastics are often found closely interconnected in end-of-life products. Therefore, we want to further develop the sensor technology so that it allows to not only distinguish between metals and polymers, but also to identify the specific types of the materials. Did you know that cars are one of the most recyclable consumer products, with 80–86% of their materials being recyclable. This includes the metal frame, plastic bumpers, and body parts, which can be reused or recycled unless they're significantly damaged. And all-electric cars have regenerative braking, which means that when you brake, some electricity is returned to the battery, increasing your driving range.
