Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay
What does the face of #mentalhealth look like to you?
The faces of mental health are all around us; mental health does not discriminate.
I am the face of high functioning clinical depression.
The World Health Organization defines mental health as a state of well being in which individuals can realize their full potential, can cope with the normal every day stresses of life, and are able to be strong, contributing members of society in their workplace, home, and communities.
According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada and the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety
🔹 1 in 5 Canadians will experience a mental health concern in any given year
🔹 Mental illness affects 1.2 million children and youth in Canada rising to 7.5 million by age 25
🔹 By the time Canadians are 40, 1 in 2 will have experienced or are living with a mental illness
🔹 Young leaders ages 15 to 24 are more likely than any other age group to experience mental illness
🔹 More than 28% of people ages 20 to 29 experience mental illness in a year
🔹 Psychological health illnesses are the number one cause of disability claims in Canada
🔹 Psychological health concerns cost the Canadian economy $51 billion per year and $20 billion stem from work related causes
🔹 Absenteeism and employee turn over costs employers $6 billion per year with the total cost to our Canadian economy being $50 billion annually
🔹 Today, 21.4% of the working population in Canada is currently experiencing a mental health challenge accounting for 30% of our short and long term disability claims are are rated one of the TOP THREE drivers of such claims by 80% of Canadian employers.
We often hear that our mental health system is broken. I would beg to differ; we have not built it yet. We are simply treating the symptoms without understanding the root causes.
Being proactive, if we reduce the number of people in Canada experiencing a new mental illness in any given year by 10%, in a ten year period, we could save up to $4 billion in our Canadian economy.
Together, we CAN improve the lives of all Canadians by supporting mental health and well being.
🔹 Create a mental health awareness program in YOUR organization founded on empathy, care, kindness, and understanding
🔹 Be aware of symptions, understand the challenges your teams face and look for innovative solutions
🔹 Build resources and tools to support mental health
🔹 Cultivate inclusive, safe spaces for brave conversations
Let's work together to build #safespaces in YOUR organization.
