Should I be investing in “Alternative Investments?” "Alternatives" (alts) are investments that are not traditional investments like, stocks, bonds, or cash. Before you can decide if you should be in vesting in alts, you need to understand what they are and how they fit into a portfolio. Think of things like private equity, private debt, real estate, or hedge funds (there are many more). They can offer less correlated returns (and higher returns) to the broader market but are not suitable for everyone. Alts come with additional risks and characteristics that question suitability. Alternatives can be less liquid which means if you need to sell today, that may not be possible or may come with additional fees. They are often more expensive and have larger minimums, so you need to consider the risk/reward and how you will size the investment. Finally, the return dispersion within alternative investments tends be much wider than with traditional investments. Therefore, due diligence, manager selection, and weighting are critical. In recent years, more investors and advisors have turned to alternatives for increased diversification and enhanced return potential. But as noted above, you want to be careful to make sure that you don’t have an advisor just learning about alternatives as they are recommending them to you. According to a recent series of Fidelity studies found that only 26% of financial advisers currently have exposure to alternative investments, compared with 86% of institutional investors. Because of our experience with large family offices, Sunpointe’s principals have been allocating to alternative investments for over 18 years. At Sunpointe, we meet many alternative managers and normally only find 5-10% of them attractive enough to conduct significant due diligence. We also created an alternative investments framework that is a spectrum from foundational investments that might be appropriate for a broad range of clients to niche investments, likely only suitable for very large investors with well developed private investment programs.
