This week we welcomed 80 summer interns into our Capital Markets business, representing the top 1% selected from over 6,000 applicants! Some of my most valuable experiences came from my internships, shaping not only my professional life but also my personal journey.   During my first one at Arthur Andersen (at the time part of the Big 5!), I discovered two things: that public accounting wasn't for me, but that I had a passion for client management. This realization allowed me to shift full focus to business and finance. The following summer, my interest in technology and finance was sparked during my Hewlett-Packard internship, but I realized I was seeking a more entrepreneurial environment.   The final piece of the puzzle was my first job, a short run at tech start-up ReplayTV at the end of the tech boom in ‘99. This was followed by a great opportunity at a high growth start-up, Good Technology. However, I ultimately decided tech was not my passion and shifted my sights to commercial real estate. With the invaluable support of my mentors at Good Technology (thanks Danny Shader, Joel Jewitt), I wrapped up my role there and moved to Dallas to pursue CRE.   Without these formative experiences, I wouldn't have discovered my passion, and it’s why I love welcoming new interns to our program at JLL. A big thank you to the TIAA summer interns I met with yesterday (thanks to Geoffrey C. of our Early Talent Team for facilitating). This dynamic group of interns brought great energy and came prepared with insightful questions about TIAA’s Wealth Management business, career progression in a corporate environment, and work-life balance. I offered a few tips to help them get the most out of their internship – learn new skills, grow existing ones, and connect with as many people as possible to expand their network. One of my favorite parts of the discussion was when we talked about the importance of personal brand. A key question to consider when reflecting on your brand is, “what do people say about me when I am not in the room?” Each person and the skills and qualities they possess are an individual’s brand. "Let's do this" I remember telling myself as I stepped into the office on my first day of the internship at Morgan Stanley. Nervous, anxious, scared, and excited, I took that first step. Fast forward to today, two months later, as I recollect my thoughts to write this post, I can confidently say that this experience has been nothing short of transformative. From working tirelessly on projects to immersing myself in the organization's vibrant culture, each day offered a new opportunity to learn and grow. The journey extended far beyond the tasks I completed. Here are some key takeaways: 1. The Art of Asking Good Questions: Crafting questions that reflect curiosity and elicit comprehensive answers. 2. The 'So What' Question: Always consider the impact and outcome of your work. 3. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: Collaboration is essential for success. 4. Enjoy the Process: Embrace the journey, even when it’s challenging. 5. Seek Help When Needed: Never hesitate to ask for assistance. 6. Challenge the Status Quo (Respectfully): Don’t be afraid to suggest improvements. 7. Networking: Building connections opens doors to exciting opportunities. 8. Make Friends (especially with your juniors) 9. It's okay to make mistakes, no one is perfect. The culture at Morgan Stanley is exceptional, firmly rooted in its core values and reflected in every aspect of daily operations. What stands out most to me is how these values are not just words on paper but actively upheld and integrated into the workplace culture. At the heart of this culture is a strong emphasis on integrity, teamwork, and continuous improvement. All these factors created a safe environment for me to make mistakes and I did make mistakes. However, instead of punitiveness, I was met with understanding and support. These mistakes were seen as opportunities for growth and learning which truly empowered me to work to my full potential. I am immensely grateful to the amazing people I met along the way; people who supported, motivated, and inspired me to give my best every day. Their encouragement played a crucial role in building my confidence. To wrap up, I'd like to say that some moments leave an indelible mark on your memory. This internship is one of those rare, unforgettable, incredible experiences. #myMSInternship
