Professor of Authentic Music Theory & Dean of Infrastructure; National Teaching Fellow (2021) and QAA Reviewer.
At a time when the #value of a #degree is under question (and as brilliantly discussed by Livia Scott on the Wonkhe podcast) and as I walk into the lecture room this morning to teach first years, we really need as a sector to ‘make explicit’ the benefits to the #person, #society, #wellbeing and the #economy. https://lnkd.in/eb5j7RYj

The latest on #SoundsLikeImpact!
The Arts Can Save the World! https://lnkd.in/embysPmd That's the title of the recent edition of #SoundsLikeImpact. I've long been a believer in the power of the arts, and am fortunate to have spent the last 5 years as a board member of New York City Arts in Education Roundtable . That's why I was very excited when Tink Media reached out to see if I wanted to have Arts Educators Save the World on my newsletter. Host Erica Halverson is doing great work, and I encourage you to check out her curation to understand why arts education is important and what we can do to create access. Also in this edition is an interview with Sarah Christie, creator of Earth Care podcast. In her 5th season of the show, Sarah decided to focus on the impact the music industry can have on climate change. Get to know Sarah and her work! And as always, would love feedback and if you enjoy this newsletter, please share widely! #podcasts #socialimpact #artseducation #music #climate #audioforaction #newsletter

I've had the privilege of working with Steven on this incredible show for the last 12 years, and it's been a pleasure to watch him develop his craft. The premise, "if you were given a one-way ticket to any place, time or state of mind, where would you go, and why?" is a conversational gateway into a person's true desires, aspirations, and values. Check out this piece from our alma mater on his One Way Ticket journey!
Many thanks to my undergraduate alma mater, Washington University in St. Louis, for the very kind piece on their site about my "The One Way Ticket Show" podcast, now in its 12th (yikes!) season! https://lnkd.in/ekEDgwfF #podcast #podcaster #podcasting #interviews #washingtonuniversity #washu #wustl #stlouis

You scroll past some posts because you have a "useful" filter of what will be "worth your time". But then how will you ever be delightfully surprised? or get a new spark of an idea? or check your perspective? Give this a try: - Pick a resource. ex. LinkedIn, podcasts, TEDTalks - Every day for a week, actively look for something there that you would normally have scrolled past, and give it, say 15 minutes of your attention. - At the end of the week, notice what surprised you, what you dismissed, and how creative you feel. https://lnkd.in/ermS5pcM 📆 Schedule a chat with me to get moving in your career. #leadershipcoaching

I was a recent guest on doctoral candidate Allen Babiarz-Lira's Entertainment Education podcast, where we talked about social media's potential for teaching and learning! One topic we discussed was tips for educators who want to use social media to educate the public, here are my guidelines: 1. A social media post cannot contain the same amount of information as your 50-minute lecture; choose ONE point to focus on! 2. If filming a video (short-form vertical or long(er)-form horizontal), PRACTICE and make sure you sound like a human! 3. Use jump cuts (i.e., transitions) to your advantage - these produce an orienting response in the viewer which essentially restarts their attention span. Use cuts to keep people interested and to edit out unnecessary pauses. 4. It's our ethical duty as educators and scientists to convey the nuance and limitations of research - do not fall for social media's "All" or "Never" dramatic language.
