Mass timber and #sustainability go hand in hand, paving the way for a greener future in construction. 🌍 Todd Beyreuther, Director of Product at MMT, has been speaking on hot topics in timber and was recently featured on the Conscious DesignHaus podcast. When asked about sustainability and timber products, here’s what he had to say: 🎙️ “The product side is multi-scale, developing CLT and GLT and the material scales, but what's exciting about where the industry is going is now looking into the components, assemblies, and full building systems that are designed for partner developers and architects. We believe in using wood as a renewable material and finding those commercialization patents. We can drive more of the supply chain value systems to align with our partners’ value systems.” ♻️ 🔗 Want to hear more? Episode alert: Everybody in the Pool episode 34 is out, covering sustainable prefab housing with Steve Glenn of Plant Prefab! I’ve talked on the show before about how buildings and the built environment are responsible for a huge amount of global carbon emissions and energy demand—almost 40 percent—by some estimates. In fact, in 2022, when we were all focused on other things, a UN report noted that although the buildings and construction industry has made some investments in energy efficiency and more sustainable processes, its emissions have dramatically exceeded its gains. In fact, they hit an all-time high after a brief dip during the pandemic. Steve Glenn has been working on more sustainable and energy-efficient housing designs since 2006, when he helped build the first LEED Platinum-certified house in the world (where he happens to live now), and in the process, started a sustainable housing design company called Living Homes. As he tells me on the show, Living Homes started as a prefab housing design firm and outsourced its building to factories around the world, but he eventually determined that in-sourcing housing production—and building super high-tech automated factories for maximum efficiency and sustainability—was the only way to go. So he founded a new company called Plant Prefab that specializes in multi-unit housing, like condos and apartment buildings—helping solve another one of housing’s sustainability problems, which is that denser housing is more carbon-efficient than single-family homes. Please enjoy this week’s episode, subscribe, and tell a friend! https://lnkd.in/g_9td98w #climatechange #climatetech #prefab #sustainability #housing #housingsolutions

It is Wednesday, so you know what that means... the latest episode of the #ClimateConfident #Podcast just dropped! 🎙️ This week I had a fascinating conversation with Daniel Jaconetti, AIA, LEED AP, the National Sustainable Design Leader at HED, about the future of #SustainableArchitecture and the importance of #IntegratedDesign in achieving #NetZero buildings. In this episode, Daniel takes us through his journey from his early environmental passions to leading sustainable design at HED. We delve into key topics such as: The critical role of integrated design and cross-disciplinary collaboration Innovative projects like the West Berkeley Public Library Emerging technologies and materials, including mass timber and biological materials Strategies to future-proof buildings against evolving regulations Practical advice for young architects and engineers Daniel’s insights are invaluable for anyone committed to advancing sustainable design and building a greener future. 🌍 🔊 Check the comments for a link to the full episode What do you think is the most significant barrier to achieving widespread sustainable architecture: Cost, regulations, or industry inertia? Building envelope addict and innovator ◆ BILDA Rain-screen Fixing SuperSystem inventor, developer and producer
Sustainability is an existential issue. A complete paradigm change needed in our industry.
Is concrete a sustainable building material? We had the precast experts on from Clark Pacific to really dive in. ‘Resilience, robustness, and durability in design is sustainability.’ This took the conversation in a whole new direction. When we think about sustainability, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Embodied carbon - a measure of the carbon footprint to produce, deliver, and install a building material. How often do we take the entire building lifecycle into consideration? Particularly in a world where buildings must withstand extreme conditions induced by Mother Nature? Thank you to Blake Roskelley and Doug Bevier, PE for the informative episode. Links to the full conversation can be found in the comments below.

Are you mad about Passivhaus? Serious about sustainability? Or maybe you think it has all gone a bit too far? Either way, if you know your passivhaus stuff, then I would really love to talk to you on The Heald Approach Podcast I am looking to do an honest episode all about passivhaus construction to dispel myths and weigh up the pros and cons. For those who don’t know, passivhaus buildings are so well constructed, insulated and ventilated that they retain heat from the sun and the activities of their occupants, requiring very little additional heating or cooling. The following five principles are central to passivhaus design and construction: 1) superinsulated envelopes, 2) airtight construction, 3) high-performance glazing, 4) thermal-bridge-free detailing, and 5) heat recovery ventilation. So if you or anyone you know would be up for a chat about its impact (or lack of) on sustainability, please comment or drop me a message . I don’t bite, I promise! #passivhaus #sustainableconstruction #thehealdapproach

What’s LEED and how’s it changing buying patterns? Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), is a globally recognized green building certification program that provides a framework for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of buildings in an environmentally responsible manner. As more governments, corporations, and institutions prioritize sustainability goals, there is a growing demand for LEED-certified buildings and products. Brian Miller from ARCAT explains more about it on the Rooted in Innovation podcast, check it out here ➡️ https://bit.ly/3WOde5g #TreeStaple #landscapedevelopment #landscaping #treepodcast #gardeningpodcast #LEED #sustainability

Inspiring Words from Jon Acuff👍 I recently came across a powerful quote from Jon Acuff on his podcast All It Takes is a Goal: "In the game of you, there is only one competitor." In the sustainable buildings industry, I often find myself comparing my progress to my peers. It's easy to feel like I'm lagging behind in certain achievements or areas of knowledge. However, when I shift my focus to my own unique background and the knowledge I've gained, I find it much less discouraging. It becomes easier to identify where I want to grow and improve. We all have a tendency to compare ourselves to others. But if we must compare, I feel we should do so fairly—by only measuring ourselves against those with similar experiences and backgrounds. In my case, it's my diverse experiences outside of architecture and sustainable buildings that have become my greatest strengths. From cabinet making, concrete work, and welding to years in aircraft maintenance, these have shaped my unique perspective in this field. So, if there's anyone else in the sustainable buildings industry with a similar journey, let's connect and compare notes. I'm always eager to learn and grow alongside others who share this unique path.

https://lnkd.in/gCi5X88r I had the incredible opportunity to be a guest on The Building Code Podcast to discuss a topic that I’m deeply passionate about: The Long-Term Impact of Sustainability in Construction. It was an exciting conversation where we explored how sustainable practices are not just a trend but a necessity for the future of our industry. From building science to high-performance homes, we delved into how thoughtful construction can lead to structures that stand the test of time, benefiting both our clients and the environment. If you're interested in the future of construction and what it takes to build homes that last, I’d love for you to give it a listen! #TheBuildingCode #BuiltWithBuildertrend #SustainableBuilding #HighPerformanceHomes #BuildingScience #ConstructionInnovation

I learned much in this excellent conversation on the role of architecture and planning in enabling human flourishing, being climate resilient and the importance of making and doing things in the world.
Director at HAT Projects, chair of Creative Colchester, co-chair Design South East Design Review Panel and Suffolk Design Review Panel. Planner, designer and participatory design expert.
It was a real treat to have a podcast conversation with Benjamin Yeoh recently and it's now live. We covered a lot - Jaywick, #climate #resilience, what I learnt from my early experience in theatre, the Rural Studio pedagogy, and meanings and the symbolic value in architecture and what that means for design codes and the whole style debate. The link below includes a transcript if you are a person who, like me, still prefers to read rather than listen.... https://lnkd.in/egQZZwMW #regeneration #planning #architecture
