Before joining OM Pharma, I had limited knowledge about the rare disease we're tackling today. However, collaborating with Alexander Bienz, Alpha 1 Verein Schweiz and our incredible team has been eye-opening. Together, we've delved into understanding Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD), advocating for patients, and boosting awareness. Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency is a genetic condition 🧬 that can lead to lung, liver, and skin diseases. Why is this cause so important, you ask? Well, AATD is often diagnosed too late due to a lack of awareness, nonspecific symptoms often mistaken for other conditions, stigma surrounding lung disease, limited routine screening, and the absence of widespread genetic testing. I'm very pleased to announce that my first paper has just been published! Myself, Robin N. Thompson (University of Oxford), Christian (Kit) Yates, and Ruth Bowness (both University of Bath as well as me) are proud to present 'Mathematical methods for scaling from within-host to population-scale in infectious disease systems', which has been published in Epidemics by Elsevier. Mathematical modellers model infectious disease dynamics at different scales. Within-host models represent the spread of pathogens inside an individual, whilst between-host models track transmission between individuals. However, pathogen dynamics at one scale affect those at another. This has led to the development of multiscale models that connect within-host and between-host dynamics. In this article, we systematically review the literature on multiscale infectious disease modelling according to PRISMA guidelines, dividing previously published models into five categories governing their methodological approaches (Garira (2017)), explaining their benefits and limitations. This webinar (comprehensive at 1.5-hours) webinar will follow the FCoV-23 outbreak in Cyprus from early 2023. The presenters are actively involved in the investigation, will describe the appearance of this outbreak, the differences in the clinical appearance of the “FCoV-23” , the findings from the polymerase chain reaction testing, and the whole genome analysis of PCR confirmed cases.

I am excited to share that our review paper on the Immunomicrotope Concept is featured on the September cover of Trends in Parasitology. The term "immunomicrotope," coined by us, describes how tissue microenvironments and diverse metabolic factors influence the fate of Leishmania parasites. In this issue of Trends in Parasitology, we highlight key cellular and molecular players in cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis, focusing on parasite control and persistence. The cover art, Vasily Kandinsky’s Circles in a Circle (1923), beautifully captures the complexity of the immunomicrotope, symbolizing immune cells, parasites, cytokines, and blood vessels at the infection site.
