AI tools are coming to market to help candidates secure their dream jobs. I was fortunate enough recently to be asked to test one of these tools before it was released to the public, but I was sceptical about its use. It was a mock interview tool and it reframed my perspective on how these tools can help job seekers. What it can’t do: - assume the personality of the interviewer - predict their specific pain points - know their reason for hiring - understand the structure of the business and department What it can do: - ask general questions that you should be prepared to answer in any interview - feedback on the quality of the structure of your answers - help you understand how an interviewer may follow up on an original question to dig deeper Overall, will a mock interview tool help you for a specific role… no. What it will do is teach you good interview practice, such as using frameworks like ‘problem, solution, outcome’ or ‘STAR’. It will get you thinking about your experience as a whole and developing stock answers/stories that can be used. For those with little experience of interviewing I’d highly recommend trying a mock interview AI tool!

AI in the interview: A new challenge for recruiters In a recent conversation with a colleague, I learned about a candidate they had who was reading real-time AI-generated responses during their video interview. It sparked me to ask, is that a thing? It seems it is a growing concern among recruiters and hiring managers. While concrete statistics are lacking, some experts estimate that up to 25% of tech job candidates may already be utilizing AI to formulate their interview answers. This trend poses significant challenges for interviewers. Detecting AI-generated verbal responses is difficult, as they can’t be easily scanned like written text. So, my recruiter friends, try these tactics to figure out if your candidates are using this new tool — and ensure you’re getting real responses: 1) Ask more probing follow-up questions – and ask about specific accomplishments or items from their resume. 2) Focus on personal experiences. Here’s one of my favorites: Tell me about the last mistake you made and how you recovered from it. 3) Beef up your observation of non-verbal cues: Pay close attention to body language, eye movements, and other visual cues that can help identify if a candidate is reading from a script. 4) Ask about the candidate’s preparation process: Directly inquiring about how the candidate prepared for the interview can provide insights and potentially reveal the use of AI tools. And most importantly, stay informed about AI technologies! AI is already used by job seekers to aid their applications and interviews. But employers are also using AI to identify when AI has been used.🕵️ Individuals are utilising not only the ability to soup up their CVs and cover letters but also using tools during video interviews to increase their chances of a perfect interview. If you weren’t already aware, there are AI tools that can make it appear as if you’re making eye contact even when you aren’t. Scary stuff, right? The trouble for employers: 😖 They are struggling with knowing what’s a genuine application, making the pre-interview stage challenging. 😯 There is AI they can use that combats this issue e.g. reverse imaging and other detection tools, but there can be ethical, legal and PR risks involved. 🤕 Even if they do manage to weed out the fakes, the damage may already be caused if they use AI to aid their recruitment. AI learns from the data we feed it. If the trend continues, these AI-curated CVs may lead to bias when it comes to ranking and how AI feeds back to us. Here’s how my immigrant client started securing more interviews by just using AI: My client had a strong resume, with amazing experience, but wasn’t receiving any interviews. So, we took advantage of AI tools. Here’s how: ↳ Identifying keywords: We used an AI tool (like ChatGPT) to analyze job descriptions and extract the most relevant keywords and necessary skills mentioned. ↳ Optimizing resume: Their resume was then tailored to include these key terms naturally fitting into their experience descriptions and skills section. ↳ Creating cover letter: Used AI to build/tailor the cover letter to the jobs they are applying for. The result? Recruiters were clearly recognizing their qualifications And seeing they were a strong match for the roles. Finally, increasing their interview calls. This is just one example of how AI is transforming the recruitment and hiring landscape. Don't walk away from these tools. Start implementing them in your job search strategy. -
