MeRIT Megaproject Research Interdisciplinary Team’s Post

This is a great opportunity to debate the institutional contradictions characterizing the context surrounding megaprojects. Managers increasingly operate under a legal mandate to implement a stakeholder perspective and give 'conscientious regard' , righly so, to the social and environmental concerns raised by project stakeholders. Yet we lack mechanisms to finance projects with a purpose-orientation because of difficulties to measure in money terms (and codify in the cost-benefit analysis) the value appropriated by stakeholders. How to square the circle is far from clear. But what is clear is that the problem goes well beyond project contigencies, Monte Carlo simulations, optimism bias uplifts, and corporate social responsibility/ESG initiatives. This is a research agenda for our century!
