🤝Getting Stronger Together 🤝 We are excited to share that exchange and clustering activities between the sister #HorizonEU funded projects under the same call HORIZON-CL6-2023-CLIMATE-01, AWARD_HEU, MARCLAIMED EU and RECREATE, have started. This cluster #AlternativeWaterResources4Climate focuses on enhancing the reliability and effectiveness of alternative water resources (#AWR) supply systems and technologies. As part of this, the #policy, #regulation and #financing experts of the three projects had a first round of exchange, focusing on identifying #synergies regarding their policy-relevant work as well as establishing future exchange and cooperation activities. We look forward to continuing our #clustering activities to promote the use of #AlternativeWaterResources across Europe. "Alone, we go faster. Together, we go further" Stay tuned for more updates🌟 #CollaborationInAction #water #Sustainability #climateresilience #horizoneurope

Driving Client Success in Climate Goals through Forest Management | Professional Services Manager at F&W Forestry Services
I recently listened to a podcast episode titled “The Untold Story of the Voluntary Carbon Market” by Bionic Planet, highlighting the distinction between compliance markets (the “stick” approach) used to enforce the law and voluntary markets (the “carrot” approach) designed to encourage actions beyond legal requirements and test new methodologies not yet ready for compliance markets. I’m trying to figure out the “edge” — what is factual and widely accepted. Will adopting rules that govern the voluntary carbon market to require promoting more restoration stifle innovation, creativity, or progress? Currently, it seems like managers are considering restoration if the management unit lends itself to it; project developers would be wise to try to consider if it fits based on the objectives, needs, and desires of the title holder. As a newcomer to this field, I intend to read the rest of the report to deepen my understanding. Regardless, I am grateful that society is beginning to value this priceless commodity that has so much value to society. #forestry #climate #naturalcapital #carbon
It’s finally out! “Opportunities for Ecological Restoration in the Voluntary Carbon Market” (https://lnkd.in/gj5_eVrg) originated out of a question: why is it so hard to find carbon projects that center ecological restoration? In working with Meta and others, we found that there were tons of projects that subsidize monoculture plantations in the tropics or extending rotation lengths by a few years in temperate timberlands, but very few that work to bring back something akin to “natural” forest. So, over the course of 2023, I led an effort alongside Dr. Sarah Federman and Sanna O'Connor-Morberg to draft a report that explored why this was and how we could nudge the market toward more restoration. We interviewed some of the smartest folks in the field while also conducting our own research and analysis. As we’ve been noodling we’ve seen others ask similar questions (Lofqvist, Garrett, & Ghazoul 2023) and propose interesting solutions (Ecosystem Restoration Standard). The report was a collaboration from a passionate team, with special shout-outs to Tracy Johns, Logan Sander, and Sanna O'Connor-Morberg alongside many others. Very curious to see whether it can lead to any collective “ahas” and galvanize creative solutions.

Space technologies are set to play a fundamental role in sustainable water management and it is essential that they be accessible to farmers who produce food in rural areas every day. With these words the Sixth International Conference on the Use of Space Technology for Water Management (Space4Water 2024) began. 📰👇 https://lnkd.in/eN9ZFPxs
Conference organized by UN agency at IICA Headquarters discusses how space technology can reach farmers to contribute to sustainable water management

It was a true pleasure and deep learning experience to work with Alex Dolginow, Sarah Federman, Sanna O'Connor-Morberg, my team Patrick Nease and Raag Lavingiya and our expert interviewees on this report. Thank you to Carbon Direct for leading the development of this report and being such great partners all the way through the process. Buyers so often say we want to invest in natural climate solutions as a way to drive land restoration, biodiversity improvements, and healthy spaces for people to thrive. So why does it seem like natural ecosystem restoration projects can be tricky to truly identify in carbon markets, and what can buyers, standards, developers, financiers, foundations, and scientists do to boost their chances of real climate and environmental impact and access to critical carbon market financing? Those are some of the questions that started the conversation that led to this report’s development. We hope it’s as useful to you to read as it was for us to put it together. Now let’s all get to our respective homework assignments and bring more natural ecosystem restoration to reality!

Groundbreaking new Global Dam Watch database enables researchers and policymakers to analyse river barriers and reservoirs across the world like never before. But don't lisent to me, listen to my colleague, Michele Thieme, Deputy Director, Freshwater at World Wildlife Fund and a leader on the project. “This database provides a major step forward toward a comprehensive and consistent global database of river barriers and reservoirs. A wide range of hydrological and water resources analyses are now possible, with major implications for water resources management and conservation of freshwater systems – the lifeblood of humans and nature across the globe.” Learn more about the database in this new peer-reviewed journal article in Scientific Data https://lnkd.in/e-BBrete And access the full dataset here https://lnkd.in/efhY2yCk
Brand-new @GlobalDamWatch database includes 41,145 barrier locations and 35,295 reservoirs, with a storage capacity of 7,420 km³ and a surface water area of 304,600 km². It represents a huge leap in the understanding of socio-economic and environmental impacts of dams. Find the article here: https://lnkd.in/eCUezDsR The newly released data, published in Scientific Data, empowers decision-makers by shedding light on the trade-offs associated with river barriers. With this tool, we can better manage #freshwater ecosystems and facilitate more sustainable water resources for future generations.
