Mobile-with-RTK measurement of underground #infrastructure using Pix4D Catch is quick and accessible, but what are the results? For this small example, 2D and 3D data is shown in #Pix4DCloud, with #survey data overlaid, before further processing. The example shows a surface water utility vault, fed by a DA75 pipe from a linear drainage channel, draining through a DN200 concrete pipe. Sediment build-up obscures the bottom of this outlet; the survey stick captures the required point, but LiDAR/photogrammetry cannot (this also applies to inverted terrestrial or SLAM scanning, or when water is in the pipe). The solution is a calculated point on the DN200 pipe, here modelled in Autodesk Civil 3D, giving a height difference of 6mm from the contact-based measurement from the #Trimble R12i (the reference here). These tools allow operations/maintenance staff to capture an overview of the underground situation, and make the information available across their organisation. How does a #GNSS solution work below ground level? When above ground, RTK-corrected GNSS positions the device accurately as the model is created; below ground, the photogrammetric reconstruction with LiDAR sensor assistance continues to create the 3D model. In-app upload and automated processing complete the workflow on site. One of the more challenging digital scanning projects Element6 Solutions completed involved a dock that extended 0.5 miles out into a lake. A number of modifications to the piping were required under challenging marine environmental and safety conditions. Element6 set the required targets, established control, and collected the existing conditions. Element6 supplied the client with a ReCap file so that they could design the piping design in CadWorx for AutoCAD. The preliminary design was returned to Element6 who then used CadWorx and Cloudworx to check for clashes and interferences. The necessary modifications were made, and the final design was used to pre-fabricate the new piping in the shop in order to minimize the time in the harsh marine environment.
