https://lnkd.in/dwWZv39R One of the biggest challenges of enclosed conservation is the continuous displacement of native people or indeginous communities as conservancies are created. In this article I analyze the tragedy of enclosure in global commons governance based on the story of the Q'eqchi Maya lowlanders of Guatemala and why inclusive models are essential in advancing equality. #Enclosed #Conservancy #CarbonCredits #GlobalCommons #GlobalSouth

Our colleague, Esther Marijnen, will be speaking at the upcoming webinar hosted by The Oakland Institute: "From Abuse to Power: Ending Fortress Conservation in the Democratic Republic of Congo." 🌍 Esther will discuss the urgent need to end the militarization of conservation in the DRC, which has been contributing to human rights violations and even fueling armed mobilization. Her extensive research challenges the idea that militarized conservation is the only solution - particularly in conflict-ridden areas like eastern DRC. 🔍 Key Topics: >>The harmful impact of violent conservation on local communities and biodiversity >>Why demilitarizing conservation is not only possible but essential >>The role of development donors in financing these militarized efforts - and the need to hold them accountable Join us in this critical conversation and explore alternative approaches that prioritize both people and nature. 🗓️ Date: October 2nd 📍 Details Below https://lnkd.in/edecqZbM #Conservation #HumanRights #Biodiversity #SustainableDevelopment #AlternativeConservation #Demilitarization

A survey carried out last year by the Green Livelihoods Alliance, of which IUCN NL is part, showed that partners and communities in the programme experience difficulties in their civic freedom, seriously impacting their work to protect forests and the livelihoods of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in forest landscapes. Effective forest conservation and governance by Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities can only be achieved in a context where civil society has a safe operational space. Human rights and conservation go hand in hand. 🌿 A rights-based approach to conservation recognises that environmental initiatives must also respect and empower people. 🌏 It ensures local and Indigenous communities are at the centre of decision-making and directly benefit from conservation efforts. 🤝 This approach is crucial because protecting nature and upholding human rights must coexist for lasting, meaningful change. As our CEO, Martin Harper puts it: "Intrinsic to our local presence with our 123 national Partners around the globe is our commitment to a robust embrace of a broad-based human rights approach to conservation. Ethically and practically, furthering human rights in everything we do is an imperative if we are to be successful." 🌎 A Seat at the Table for the People 🗣️ Bishnu Tulsie, Elected Representative of the Public under the Escazú Agreement, shares how this groundbreaking agreement ensures public voices are heard at the highest levels: ✔️ Equal Representation: Unlike other processes, the Escazú Agreement gives public representatives an equal seat at the negotiating table alongside parties. ✔️ Public Consultation: Through virtual meetings and pre-COP sessions, public concerns are gathered and prioritized. ✔️ Advocating for the People: Representatives bring real issues faced by the public directly into the negotiations, ensuring decisions reflect lived realities. This approach makes the Escazú Agreement truly unique and inclusive, empowering public voices in shaping environmental justice. #EscazuAgreement #PublicParticipation #EnvironmentalJustice #SustainableFuture #Advocacy #ClimateAction Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) FIMA ONG Stronger Caribbean Together Network Bishnu Tulsie

The Climate Change & Modern Slavery Hub is an initiative to address the urgent global issue of modern slavery within the context of climate-induced migration. Join us at an online event on 9 October for the launch the hub. The intersection of climate change, migration and modern slavery is complex and poorly understood. This knowledge gap results in inadequate policies and programmes to protect vulnerable populations. The hub which was co-developed by IIED, Anti-Slavery International and OKUP - Ovibashi Karmi Unnayan Program, brings together existing evidence on these links, aiming to support informed decision-making and reduce vulnerability to all forms of modern slavery in the context of climate change. At the launch event we will hear from leading experts in climate change, migration and human rights. We are delighted to welcome the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change, Elisa Morgera. Join us for this important event! ➡ https://lnkd.in/eyUNy-2X #ClimateChange #HumanRights #migration #ModernSlavery
