🚨 Education starts with relationship 🚨 Yesterday, Andrea Guiden Pittman, Ph.D. and I visited Statesman Academy for Boys - a Charter School serving black middle school students in southeast D.C. I was struck by the commitment the school leadership has for the care of their teachers, who work exceptionally hard in a challenging context. They have an intentional focus on therapeutic professional development, a dedicated zen space (equipped with massage chairs!) and THREE in-house therapists to work exclusively with adults in the school. They take care of their teachers as they serve their community. A few other things that stood out to me: 💡 The teachers have an overwhelming focus on relationship and community, as the foundation for effective teaching and learning. The founder spoke to hundreds of young black men and asked them what they needed from school, before opening. 💡 EVERY student I saw in the school was carrying a book, with so many reading as they were waiting for their class. I don’t think I’ve seen as many young people incidentally reading in one place. 💡 The students leave the school having visited at least two different countries, exploring the history, values and culture of communities in other contexts. 💡 The school walls are full of pictures of the students achieving. When they graduate, the pictures are taken down from the wall and given to the students. Then the walls are filled with the pictures of the new students - it’s their school. 💡 Everyone who enters the school walks on a red carpet to tracks played by a DJ. Every morning. With many years in leadership, I have learned never to become discouraged when I am not invited to come and take a seat at the table. Ironically, it has helped to change the appetite of my ego because I no longer hunger for recognition, approval, and accolades. In this post, Julia Steinberg describes the belief systems being taught to public school children instead of (or in tandem with) Social Studies and Civics. This is not just being ushered in as "ethnic studies" in California. It's also happening in Minnesota and Julia believes it's a big part of why many young people have warmed to antisemitism. I understand that many terrible, group-hating regimes throughout history were born out of this way of looking the world. If you think of that viewpoint as soil, then perhaps you can understand why many think no good crop can grow from it.

*A MOMMA (AND DADDY) I MADE IT MOMENT* I started my career in K-12 education when I was just 16 years old teaching Black History to elementary school students at Summerbridge (New Haven) at Hopkins School where I also served as the student member of the board. The summer before I began college, I did an externship at the Yale Child Study Center under Dr. James Comer’s leadership, who served on the board too. I went on to focus on creating positive school culture and climates for the next 12 years, transitioning to DC with a goal of dismantling the school-to-prison-pipeline at the federal level. The work I do at the intersection of politics and policy gets more attention, and only those who “know me, know me” know about my love of and work in the education equity, child development, and psychology spaces. While I now fight inequities with the many tools I’ve picked up along the way, I have always remained committed to and involved in education, including serving as Chair of DC’s Title I Committee of Practitioners (a federally-mandated body focused on educational equity) for 8 consecutive years. Even my doctoral degree is in (education) leadership, with a specialization in policy and administration. Before you can create new knowledge, a requirement for earning the degree, you must master what already exists. To share the stage with the very people whose work you had to study and master, as a newbie, is a BIG ^#%*in DEAL! I couldn’t think of a better way to pop back on the scene as a doctor than joining these academic superstars for this panel! I am genuinely honored “and” privileged to do what I do. There are many ways in which a black male can play a great role in education and Title 1 areas of cities across the country. One of the most important ways is by becoming a positive role model and mentor for young people in these communities. Black males can serve as teachers, coaches, tutors, and community leaders who inspire and motivate students to achieve their full potential. Black males can advocate for policies and programs that promote equity and access to education. This includes supporting initiatives that address the achievement gap, provide resources and support for low-income families, and create opportunities for students to succeed academically and professionally.
