#DidYouKnow? Catherine Truitt, North Carolina State Superintendent, recently pitched a “comprehensive math reform” proposal to a state legislative committee, with the target goal of preparing students for success in Math 1.   Math 1 (typically taught in 8th or 9th grade) has often been referred to as a gateway course. Studies suggest that if students are successful in Math 1, they are more likely to graduate on time, seek postsecondary degrees & certifications, and be more successful in the workforce.    Truitt is asking both elementary and middle schools to provide students with at least 60 minutes a day of focused math skills instruction. #8 Let me boast   I was genius at math when I was in grade 11 I had a math skill of a 6th grader. 😂   And now I am a high school teacher, don't worry i don't teach math, I teach Biology and for sure I am qualified for that.   While teaching I encountered so many "geniuses" like me 😁 who has  a 7th grade, 6th grade, even it might get as low as a 3rd grade reading level, comprehension ability, math skill in a high school and preparatory class.   This phenomenon is called ACADEMIC UNDERACHIEVEMENT.   When you encounter a student with #academicunderachievement what you should do in most Ethiopian private school context is you have to teach that student as if he has the level of understanding for that grade level.   Often, You simply pretend, and the student also involves in this pretending game, rather than addressing it.   Why the pretending?   #1 Because it is too much work, and too much work needs resources like time, knowledge, strategic thinking, commitment, and money. Yet most private schools aren't sophisticated and committed enough to solve these kinds of individualized learning problems.   #2 Because The teacher is the a only one who face these problems day to day and schools administrators bury their heads in the sand, knowing there are many students in their high school who has a 7th, 6th, even a 3rd grade understanding level. And the teacher has no power in the decision making of the school, so he couldn't do anything other than pointing the problems. And those who has a say over decisions; administration staffs, aren't willing to solve the problem in the right way, in an all-inclusive (በኢቲቪ ቋንቋ ሁሉንም ባለድርሻ አካላት ባሳተፈ መልኩ) manner.   They rather say መምህራን በድንብ ማስተማር ኣለባችሁ whatever that means. Even though ችግሩ በደንብ በማስተማር ብቻ ሳይሆን የትምህርት ቤቱን፥ የወላጅን፥ የመምህሩን እንዲሁም የራሱ የተማሪውን ድርሻ የሚጠይቅ ሆኖ ሳለ every responsibility pushed towards the teacher.   #3 because, it is too little to late. These issues of widened gap between students grade level and understanding level should be addressed as early as possible. Yet, in many private schools it is common to find a student who has a 7th, 6th and even as low as 3rd grade level reading, doing Math and understanding ability. And due to the above reasons ተማሪው የሚማርበት የክፍል ደረጃና የተማሪው የማንበብ፥ ሂሳብ የመስራት እና የመረዳት ብቃት የሚያሳየው የክፍል ደረጃ እየሰፋ ሄዶ ሄዶ ሄዶ 12ኛ ክፍል ሲደርስ፥ ትምህርት ቤቱ በ12ኛ ክፍል መአረግ የ የ8ኛ፥ የ6ኛ ፥ የ3ኛ ክፍል ልጅ ያስመርቃል ማለት ነው።   Therefore, Attention parents, guardians, and anyone involved in a child's education: Addressing academic underachievement as early as possible is crucial for a child's success. The younger a child is when intervention begins, the easier it is to reshape learning habits and guide them onto the right track. #Education in this country is a mess. Students are passed from grade to grade by a system barely holding itself together by the mercy of #substituteteachers I have been told by Headmasters, students most affected by the pandemic are tragic but there's nothing we can do but focus on the incoming students. An entire generation of students tragically ignored and struggling. #teenagers need #teachers now more than ever. No matter who they are. We must stop teaching down and graduating 4th grade math and reading levels. What are we going to do about this?! There are not enough math teachers in the US. This isn't just a shortage. It's a crisis. The numbers are alarming, and the impact on our students is even more so. Students deserve teachers who are passionate about their subjects and have the expertise to guide them. Math is a foundational subject that builds critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Without enough qualified math teachers, we're shortchanging our students' futures. What can we do about it? We need to make teaching more attractive by providing better support, resources, and fair compensation. It's not just about filling positions; it's about valuing the educators who inspire our next generation. Every student deserves a quality math education, and every teacher deserves the support to provide it. Let’s prioritize education and ensure our schools have the math teachers they need. High Schools talk about ensuring students are college and career-ready, but unfortunately, they do not always do what is necessary to make that happen within the constraints of K-12 districts. We need to lobby to make our school boards and district administrators recognize they are not teaching skills that will help these students. There is a disconnect between state/district mandates, political pressure within and outside schools, and helping our students become independent critical thinkers. As a parent, I want my children to come out of High School with the requisite skills to adjust, continually improve and reflect. The math teacher in me wants every student to know every concept that has historically been included in math curriculums, but this is ignorant. I have come to accept and endorse the fact that we often teach antiquated topics that no longer give any value to utilizing STEM in 2023 and beyond. Why is grammar not taught in our school any longer with fidelity? These are two examples of many that we need to discuss with our educational leaders.

Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Midwest developed the Teaching Fractions Toolkit tailored to empower 6th grade teachers in elevating students' fraction comprehension and problem-solving skills. This toolkit will be publicly released in 2026, but a limited number of schools and districts have an immediate opportunity to access the toolkit and receive free professional development by participating in a study to evaluate its impact on teachers and students. The toolkit includes free, evidence-based professional development and resources that align with the evidence-based What Works Clearinghouse practice guide: Developing Effective Fractions Instruction for Kindergarten Through 8th Grade. More than 60% of American fourth graders are not proficient readers, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Research shows that 95% of students are cognitively capable of reading proficiently, indicating that poor literacy results from instruction failing to unlock and enhance students' potential as readers and writers. Looking for a way to refine and align several shifts to literacy instruction already underway in their district, Clear Creek ISD partnered with Education Elements to develop a comprehensive instructional framework for literacy that aligned with the Texas Education Agecny's Strong Foundations Planning grant.
