Most Software Engineers Know Nothing About Hardware It’s often said in jest that most software engineers know nothing about hardware. But could there be any truth to this harmless jibe? Well, it turns out that a lot of people agree with it. In an online discussion, a surprising number of developers, programmers, and software engineers chimed in not just to agree with it but also ascribe reasons to why that may be the case. A software engineer said, “It’s easier to count on someone than to count on yourself.” This might encapsulate a fundamental reason why many software engineers don’t delve into the hardware side of things. It’s simpler to rely on hardware experts rather than spreading oneself thin by trying to master both the fields. However, not everyone fits this stereotype. Another user proudly declared, “Imma Software engineer, Knows about hardware, Including networking (sic).” Clearly, there are software engineers who bridge the gap to understand the intricacies of hardware. Yet, they might be the exception rather than the rule #software #engineering #technology #science #computing #programming #hardware #networking Read more https://lnkd.in/dqEe9KW6

Testing Over Assumptions: A Technician's Mantra As a hardware device technician, it's crucial to refrain from making assumptions about a faulty hardware component without conducting thorough testing procedures. Instead of assuming a specific component is causing the fault, it's essential to diagnose the faulty board accurately. This principle became evident during a discussion with #Vincent about a faulty board on my desk. During discussion of fixing the issue of the faulty device, one of my colleague speculated about the source of the issue, #Vincent emphasized the importance of testing rather than speculating. This led to the adoption of a new slogan: "We Don't Think, But Test First." In our line of work, continuous learning, relearning, and unlearning are essential.

For an IT company, it is easier to acquire technical knowledge. We do that through knowledge sharing within the company, attending lectures or courses or through work and experience while having a mentor. Industry and domain knowledge, on the other hand, requires experience in the domain. It is crucial to have both in order to be able to deliver software solution that actually solves a problem in a certain industry. Here are some strategies we at Enlight Engineering employ to gain knowledge in a domain we have no experience in: https://lnkd.in/dm4gVRTP #softwareengineering #knowledgemanagement

All struggling embedded job-seekers have one thing in common—gaps in their knowledge. 2 myths I am busting today 1️⃣ Not every embedded system has OS. Whether OS is needed depends on the intended purpose of an embedded project. To a lesser degree on the preference of the designer. 2️⃣ Most embedded systems have application and system boundaries merged. Normally software below application can be considered system software. For most embedded systems, they are at same level. It is due to underlying principle that an embedded system should be as simple and straightforward as possible. I speak a lot about career and occasionally about embedded systems. Follow me and click the 🔔 bell ico to receive notifications.
