The Earth has nine planetary boundaries, critical thresholds we must respect to ensure a safe and healthy planet for human development. It’s not just about reducing CO2 emissions. The built environment impacts critical areas like biodiversity, water use, and resource extraction. At the same time, the sector has an incredible opportunity to contribute to the recovery of some boundaries by working smarter and more sustainably. By rethinking how we work, the sector can not only reduce its impact but also contribute to the recovery of some boundaries. 🎥 We’ve created an explainer video to illustrate the role of the built environment within planetary boundaries. Watch it now: https://lnkd.in/dyH6PA2i 💡 Let’s spread the word! Watch the video and share it with your network to inspire action in the construction sector. 🌍 **A Sustainable Future for Over 10 Billion People?** 🌍 So far, no study has been able to show whether all people can meet their basic needs without exceeding planetary boundaries. Empa just did it! Recent research published in the Journal of Cleaner Production reveals that it's technically feasible for more than ten billion people to live sustainably on Earth while maintaining a decent standard of living. Using the "doughnut" model, the study shows that an ecological and equitable life is possible with significant changes in energy systems and agriculture. This groundbreaking study gives hope for a balanced coexistence with our planet. 🔗 [Read more here](https://lnkd.in/d-KwCZ7N)

Last week, the The New York Times highlighted how rising global temperatures could trigger irreversible climate tipping points around the world, like the mass death of coral reefs and the loss of the Amazon rainforest 🚨 The built world accounts for 40% of global CO₂ emissions, making it the world's most polluting industry and a major driver of climate change. This isn’t just a threat to our natural world: up to $21 trillion in real estate is at risk from climate impacts, as noted in our State of Built World Tech report ✍️ Decarbonising the built world is crucial to ensuring the sustainability of our ecosystems. This includes using green materials like low-carbon concrete and recycled steel, retrofitting buildings with energy-efficient technologies, and adopting sustainable urban planning ♻️ The challenge is urgent, but so is the opportunity for investors to support technology that makes a difference. That’s why we’re committed to backing tech that matters 🚀 #Climate #NetZero #BuiltWorld #Tech #Sustainability Source: NYT, State of Built World Tech Report

If the world had 1 single problem, what would it be? If we had to distill everything down to one core problem, it might be this: our inability to effectively balance and sustain human needs within the natural limits of the planet. At its root, this covers a wide array of issues — social inequalities, environmental degradation, economic challenges, and technological misalignments. Humanity’s struggle to grow and thrive without destabilizing our ecosystems or excluding vast populations from well-being is a fundamental challenge. We create extraordinary advancements, but often at the cost of depleting resources or alienating groups, which only leads to new, cascading problems. If we could solve the balancing act between progress and sustainability, we'd be closer to a world where technological and economic development benefits everyone without compromising future generations. A simple yet powerful approach to solve this problem could be to prioritize "regenerative design" across sectors. his means designing products, buildings, and systems that not only minimize harm but actually restore and replenish resources. This approach encourages creating circular systems where waste becomes a resource, energy is renewable, and ecosystems thrive alongside human activities. By shifting our focus from doing "less harm" to doing "more good," we can create a balanced future. #Sustainability #WorldChallenges #BalancedDevelopment #SocialInequality #Progress #TechnologicalMisalignments #EconomicChallenges #Environmental #HumanInequality #SustainableDevelopment #SustainableLiving #SustainableEconomy

🌿 Biomimicry: Nature's Blueprint for Sustainable Innovation 🌱 Imagine a world where our technology seamlessly integrates with nature, solving complex problems while preserving our planet. Welcome to the fascinating realm of biomimicry! Biomimicry is the practice of emulating nature's time-tested patterns and strategies to create sustainable solutions for human challenges. This approach, popularized by Janine Benyus in her groundbreaking book "Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature," is revolutionizing how we think about sustainable technology. From solar cells inspired by butterfly wings to wind turbines modeled after humpback whale fins, biomimicry is driving innovation across industries. Here are some exciting examples: 1. 🦋 Butterfly-inspired solar cells 2. 🐋 Whale fin-based wind turbines 3. 🪲 Namib Desert beetle water collection systems 4. 🌸 Lotus leaf self-cleaning surfaces 5. 🐜 Termite mound energy-efficient buildings These nature-inspired designs are not only more sustainable but often more efficient than traditional approaches. By observing and adapting nature's 3.8 billion years of R&D, we're unlocking solutions to some of our most pressing global challenges. As we face climate change and resource scarcity, biomimicry offers a promising path forward. It encourages us to create in harmony with nature, rather than against it. Are you ready to explore how biomimicry could transform your industry? Let's learn from nature's genius together! 🌟 Dive deeper into the world of biomimicry and sustainable tech! We had the privilege of sitting down with actress Nathalie Kelley to discuss her latest project — a powerful initiative focused on restoring the relationship between people and the planet. The devastating LA fires are a stark reminder: Climate change isn’t just coming, it’s already here. And without action, such events will only increase in frequency and intensity. But there’s hope. The solution begins with an alternative to high tech, known as "Lo-TEK," a local, traditional, ecological approach that could reshape our future. Nathalie spoke passionately about the overlooked technologies of Indigenous cultures, such as the Inca’s sustainable engineering and ancient agricultural practices that thrived without the need for harmful chemicals. From bio-remediation to mycoremediation, these ancestral methods offer a powerful alternative to the industrial systems currently failing us. ✨ Swipe to learn more about this game-changing movement. 🔗 Head to our website or click on the link in the comments below to read the full interview and discover how you can be part of the solution. #ClimateAction #LoTEK #Sustainability #EnvironmentalImpact #ClimateChange #Innovation #FutureForward #IndigenousTraditions
