S184 #BacktoBasics - Cell Focus: The Basophil Well, well, cell. This one’s a mystery. This cell is a little bluer, lives a little shorter than its cousins and makes up only 0.01% to 0.3% of all the blood cells. Today, we look at the #Basophil, an enigma that is still being uncovered to this day. Like the #eosinophil who loves to overreact when pollen enters a body, a basophil can be found lurking around too! Why is that? Like its eosinophil cousin, it will pick up the scent of chemokines and start moving towards the site of #inflammation AKA where the pollen lands in our respiratory airways. The presence of the intruder triggers the release of chemical signals that attract other immune cells. So while the eosinophil reacts to the intruder and releases histamine, the basophil…what does it do? Well, almost the same as the eosinophils! Apart from histamine, basophils also release heparin, a chemical that slows blood clotting. Recent studies have also shown that these cells play a role in immune modulation. This means that basophils are responsible for helping to maintain the balance in the immune system! Till more information is unearthed, our basophils will continue to float within our blood vessels, patrolling and doing its secret tasks. References: https://lnkd.in/gAWqxTVE https://lnkd.in/g22jJhj4

In this insightful presentation, Dr. Amy Proal, President of the PolyBio Research Foundation, discusses "Pathogen persistence in Long Covid and ME/CFS: evidence and research considerations". Dr. Proal explains the latest findings on SARS-CoV-2 persistence in tissue reservoirs of Long Covid patients and draws parallels to ME/CFS. She explores the impact of viral reservoirs on various body systems and emphasizes the need for comprehensive research approaches. Dr. Proal presents current studies and highlights the importance of tissue sampling, sensitive detection methods, and innovative therapeutic approaches to support the immune system. https://lnkd.in/dFW66Gz2

The Cytodelics Whole Blood Stimulation Buffer (WB-STIM) is a bespoke cell culture buffer designed for whole blood. Adding stimuli like cytokines or microbial components to blood is a common test of #immune cell function. However, this has proven difficult under many circumstances, as the immune cells quickly consume all remaining nutrients in the blood sample, leading to cell death and poor sample quality. The Cytodelics WB-STIM is designed to replicate physiological conditions and maintain nutrient levels for long stimulation periods. The Cytodelics WB-STIM is compatible with the Cytodelics #WholeBloodCellStabiliser and the #WholeBloodFixLyse Kit. #immunolgy #cellculture #biotechresearch #WBSTIM

We're excited to share our latest preprint detailing the identification of a novel master regulator in fibrosis, guided by comprehensive multiomics data analysis. This breakthrough expands our understanding of fibrosis pathogenesis. #Fibrosis #Multiomics #Preprint
Our work on identifying a new regulator of fibrosis was just uploaded to Biorxiv (https://lnkd.in/emX_iz7K). It's a really exciting example of how human sample profiling and functional, molecular and mechanistic studies can teach us new aspects of human diseases. Feel free to leave a post or comment on the Biorxiv.
