Today, the first of two Metal Shark 50 Defiant fireboats built for Anne Arundel County Fire Department departed our Franklin, LA yard en route to Maryland. Activity in Franklin is brisk with multiple fireboats, CTVs, and military patrol vessels under construction.
Ya’ know, I’ve sometimes wondered… with the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force… we should have a new military branch called the Fire Force. A huge fleet of federally owned planes of all sizes that fight wildfires or large fires in urban areas. The USA should have a large fleet of planes ready to attack these fires anywhere in the country. Like the Air Force for wildfires. Also a large contingency of men and women to assist as spotters for the air assets and people who can assist existing firefighters on the ground. The USA Fire Force. The wildfires are consuming and destroying so much every year. Time for a bold solution. JMO.

Although I have not yet formed my own opinion about this idea, I LOVE discussing possible solutions to the long term management of all natural and man-made disasters. Whatever the cause, the impact to the lives of those touched by disaster is undeniable. Everyone should be working together to find the safest, fastest, and most effective response solutions, no matter the disaster. Communication, discussion, planning and preparation must be happening before the crisis hits.

The battles in the Red Sea are the most intense that the US navy has fought since World War II. The Americans lost as they were not able to stop the Houthis from either attacking ships nor Israel itself. I think the fact that the Houthis were using old school weapons and still (in the words of American officers) "traumatizing" US sailors is going to give great pause to the navy taking on Hezbollah, which has the most up-to-date weapons and would probably sink numerous American vessels if the US did decide to directly intervene.
We are now seeing two sources in the US mainstream media that are reporting just how badly this war is going for Israel and its allies. This video is based on a report by CBS. The New York Times has also carried stories about how the IDF is having difficulty in fighting Hamas. Slowly but surely, the reality of what is happening in the Middle East is getting through to the American public through the mainstream media. If Israel continues with massacring defenseless civilians, I suspect that more of the mainstream will start to turn against Israel and, possibly, be more accurate in their reporting about just how poorly both Israel and America are doing in their military engagements in the Middle East.

Alright, let's talk about the navy's little problem with its littoral combat ships (LCS). 🚢💔
So, here's the tea ☕️: the navy seems to have a love-hate relationship with these ships, and from the looks of it, the hate might be winning. 🤷♂️ But why though?
Well, for starters, let's address the elephant in the room: cost overruns. The LCS program has been plagued with budget issues from the get-go, with the projected costs ballooning to nearly double the initial estimates. I mean, come on, who wouldn't be a little salty about that? 💸 And let's not even get started on the whole "modularity" concept, which was supposed to make the ships more adaptable and cost-effective, but ended up causing even more headaches and expenses. It's like a bad breakup that you just can't seem to shake off. 💔
Then there's the issue of effectiveness and dependability. Many critics argue that the LCS lacks the firepower and survivability needed for modern naval warfare. There have been concerns about the ships' vulnerability to enemy attacks and their ability to withstand combat situations. It's like dating someone who looks good on paper, but just can't seem to hold their own in a tough situation. 🤦♂️
But hey, it's not all doom and gloom. There are still some die-hard supporters of the LCS who believe that with the right upgrades and modifications, these ships can still prove their worth. And who knows, maybe with a little TLC, the navy's relationship with the LCS can turn around. 🤞

At the end of the day, it's clear that the navy and its littoral combat ships have some serious issues to work through. Whether it's addressing cost overruns or beefing up the ships' capabilities, it's going to take some serious effort to mend this relationship. Let's just hope that the navy and the LCS can find a way to make it work in the end.
