The Week Dedicated to Water and Sustainable Development 🌍💧 This week, I had the opportunity to participate in two meaningful events focused on water scarcity and sustainability in Central Asia. During the CAREC Institute webinar, the discussion highlighted the critical relationship between water scarcity and hydrogen production. While Dr. Vladislav Zavadskiy pointed out the region's potential for green hydrogen production, Nicholas Pomeroy stressed that only Kazakhstan has a green hydrogen policy in place, underscoring the need for regional cooperation and the development of robust policies across all Central Asian countries. I also had the honor of presenting at the Manas Conference, where I shared my insights on water management in Central Asia. In my view, water is life, but what’s even more crucial for sustainable development is cooperation. 🌍 Poland faces a major challenge with some of the most polluted air in Europe and the world. Improving air quality and heat production efficiency drove the reconstruction of Szydłowiec's municipal boiler house, with TEDOM's Quanto 800 CHP unit at its core. 📉 The reconstruction will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 6,000 tons annually. 🔄 Through advanced online monitoring, the TEDOM CHP unit collaborates with local energy sources, including coal and solar, to optimize energy consumption and reduce environmental impact. 🌱 Leading olive oil producer Spain turns to olive stones for fuel 💡 The seeds of change can sometimes be found in the most unexpected places. 👇 👇 In the face of soaring energy prices, innovative solutions shine a light on sustainable practices that can lead the way. Farmer David Jimenez Zamora, did it by using olive stones, a byproduct of olive oil production, as biomass for energy! This is a brilliant example of circular economy in action! This approach not only provides a cost-effective solution to energy needs but also contributes significantly to the decarbonization efforts, particularly in sectors that are challenging to electrify. Although over 18,000 kilometres separate the two countries, both Germany and New Zealand are united in their pledges to reach carbon neutrality: Germany by 2045 and New Zealand by 2050. This will require successful decarbonisation of their respective industrial sectors. A new study jointly prepared by adelphi and the German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce Inc. (GNZCC) identifies key areas for accelerating industrial decarbonisation efforts in both countries and makes suggestions for improving bilateral cooperation. Included in the study are recommendations for cooperation activities in five key areas: 🐄 Exchange best practices on heat pump roll-out and energy service companies (#ESCOs) for decarbonizing the 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆. 🏭 Launch sectoral dialogues on 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 use in the steel and chemical sectors. 🗣️ Set up a regular 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲 on regulations and funding for industrial decarbonisation. 🔁 Share strategies on cutting emissions, saving costs, and boosting resilience through 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀. 🌐 In a first follow-up measure, a workshop on 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 as a successful and business-driven initiative to lower emissions and cut costs (to be held in October 2024). Since oxygen is generally cheap and easy to get, it's best to plan for its use right from the start -it might even affect your site location.
