I’m excited to be heading to the Ports Australia Biennial Conference this week in Hobart! Imagine an Australian port that adjusts its operations in real-time based on developments in the maritime single window, sharing data from trade routes to dedicated road and rail corridors, streamlining operations across the supply chain. One interesting aspect of port operations is how large scale industrial electrification and the emergence of smart ports will shape the future. These ports could autonomously manage cargo flows and adapt to advancements in predictive and condition-based maintenance, environmental monitoring, and cybersecurity—including securing digital supply chains. Working in strategic foresight and exploring the futures of sustainable infrastructure with organisations like the Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd and the Pilbara Ports Authority in recent years has offered me valuable insights. If you’re interested in talking about the trends and strategies for the futures of ports and how to adapt for tomorrow's challenges, let’s connect at the conference. I’d love to exchange ideas on navigating these changes. Looking forward to the panel discussions and sharing insights into futures Mike Gallacher GAICD. #portsaustralia #futureofports #sustainableinfrastructure #strategicforesight #ports #maritime #futures

Quiet Sound’s collaborative effort reduced underwater noise by 45% with voluntary commercial vessel slowdowns through the Admiralty Inlet corridor in Puget Sound between Whidbey Island and the Olympic Peninsula. Underwater noise is a key concern for Southern Resident killer whales, in addition to reduced Chinook salmon populations and poor water quality. By working across private and public sectors, 70% of vessels decreased their speed during an 80-day slowdown with minimal effects on maritime trade and no safety impacts. https://lnkd.in/gZ8Tueh5

Historic vessel preservation is a very complex proposition. However, more signifcant than historical value, it is a vital connect to the public at large to explain the career and economic opportunities in modern maritime and international trade. Not all preserved vessels should be thought of as historic. These three vessels, combined, tell an amazing story that continues to drive innovations in containerization and intermodalism.

World Maritime Day is celebrated annually on the last Thursday of September. This year, it will be observed today, September 26. The purpose of World Maritime Day is to highlight the importance of the maritime industry and its contribution to the global economy. It aims to raise awareness about maritime safety, security, and the marine environment. The day also serves to recognize the efforts of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in promoting safe, secure, and efficient shipping on clean oceans. This year’s theme, “Navigating the Future: Safety First!” focuses on enhancing maritime safety and security while addressing the challenges posed by new technologies and alternative fuels, along with protecting the marine environment. #WorldMaritimeDay #NavigatingtheFuture #ProtectLifeBellowWater #4ABetterWorld

Explore our science & society article in the latest edition of Fram Forum, discussing maritime regulations in the Norwegian Arctic. As sea-ice and weather patterns shift, it becomes crucial to establish a regulatory framework that safeguards both environmental and human safety. 🌊
As the Arctic Ocean’s ice cover recedes, we see increased shipping amid hazardous weather and sea-ice conditions. What challenges does this pose for maritime safety? Are existing regulatory frameworks equipped to address future challenges? What can we learn from recent accidents in Norwegian waters? In #FramForum 2024, hot off the press, we navigate the waves of maritime safety regulations in the Norwegian Arctic. with Saskia Trubbach Gunnar Sander Jelmer Jeuring and Malte Müller Framsenteret Fram Centre

Interesting report on 2022 Arctic shipping activity that shows how vessel traffic in the Arctic continues to both expand and diversify. Top 20 flag states may surprise some people while giving a sense of who is both involved, interested in and likely expanding their presence in the Arctic in the short and long term. And what Arctic states need to manage now and prepare to manage for more of in the future. 2023 report will confirm continued growth based on this past season’s activity. https://lnkd.in/gNQmj_Cg

Did you know that Port of Vancouver’s US$ 1.48 billion capacity expansion project must meet 370 legally binding environmental conditions to safeguard local marine ecosystems? The port currently handles around 142 million tons of cargo annually across 29 major terminals and has direct connections to three Class 1 railroads, enabling it to serve as a key gateway for imports into Canada. In anticipation of increased volumes, the Canadian government approved the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project in 2023. This is expected to increase the port's capacity by up to 60%, adding 2.4 million TEUs of annual throughput. The project’s approval came with 370 legally binding environmental conditions including the installation of infrastructure for safe fish passage and setting noise level limits to protect the area’s killer whale population. This focus on responsible growth extends to Canada’s northern waters as well. Over the last 30 years, traffic in Canada’s northern waterways has more than tripled, as these routes have become increasingly competitive against the increasingly costly and unreliable Panama and Suez Canal routes. Arctic shipping costs and transit times have become increasingly favorable compared to traditional canal routes. To guide this growth, the Canadian government has partnered with Inuit representatives to form the Qanittaq Clean Air Shipping initiative. This program aims to leverage Inuit traditional knowledge (qaujimaniq), alongside academic research, private sector technologies, and federal agencies to develop policies for sustainable maritime expansion in the Canadian Arctic. In these weeks the traffic through the major canals is being severely tested due to external factors, from wars that reduce the efficiency of the Suez Canal to the unforeseen effects of erratic climate in the old Panama Canal. The current world trade is tied to the fate of these symbols of modernity and development. Read the article to better understand how these canals work. #Webuild ... iconic and extremely useful when you consider that a large part of global freight traffic passes through these waters, an incredible commercial value... These are incredible infrastructures, built by man overcoming complex challenges, made to last ... the new Panama Canal pays attention to the theme of sustainability with technical solutions aimed at saving water used for naval traffic while maintaining the maximum draft of ships even in critical conditions....
