LM Wind Power is highlighting the importance of Wind Blades Recycling Today, around 85-90% of wind turbines' total mass can be recycled and have established recycling practices in place. But the legacy blades are challenging to recycle due to the composite materials used in their production. While various technologies exist to recycle the composite materials in blades, they are not yet mature enough, nor widely available at industrial scale and/or cost competitive. Blade recycling, therefore, is not just a wind industry challenge, but a cross industry challenge. Industry-wide partnerships to establish the recycling value chains are the way forward. The truth about Solar Panel Recycling? Most solar waste is already recyclable, with a growing recycling industry developing around the recovery of materials for reuse. The transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy is essential in reducing emissions of the greenhouse gases that are causing rapid climate change, worldwide in order to help limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, Quantity of waste misinformation, Several U.S. state department websites, such as the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, suggest solar modules can contain toxic materials such as arsenic, gallium, germanium and hexavalent chromium. The researchers found that the two most common types of PV contain "almost none" of those toxins. The most popular modules, crystalline silicon, contain less than 0.1% lead, usually from lead solder. Meanwhile, the other most common type of module, cadmium telluride (CdTe), contains less than 0.1% cadmium, but that the compound of cadmium used is extremely stable and therefore can be recaptured in recycling processes. the recycling of solar modules is "critical to decarbonizing the PV supply chain and minimizing waste." Did you know... up to 99% of materials in a solar panel are recyclable and there are well established industrial processes to do this. A solar panel is made of a frame (typically aluminium), glass, crystalline silicon solar cells, and copper wiring, all of which can be extracted, separated, and recycled or reused. The remaining one percent is an encapsulant material which bonds the layers of a panel together. There are organisations around the UK and Europe specialising in solar recycling, such as PV Cycle and the European Recycling Platform. They are working with solar developers to minimise electrical waste and recycle old panels in line with the Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations.
