How long can we keep kidding ourselves that the status quo in #healthcare is acceptable? Here are some frightening statistics about the environmental harm we are doing. 🏥🩺♻️ 3.9% - 4.4% of global greenhouse gas emissions are produced by the healthcare sector. That's more than the entire aviation industry! 🌎💨 1.7 billion kg of medical waste are generated in the UK alone each year, enough to fill 7.5 Wembley Stadiums! ☣️🗑️ 87% of medical waste is recyclable, but only a small fraction is actually recycled. ♻️❌ 91% of plastic isn't recycled, ending up in landfills or our oceans, harming wildlife and entering the food chain as microplastics etc. 🌊🐠 By choosing sustainable products like those from Upcycled Plastics Limited we can make a difference. Their innovative approach to transforming landfill and ocean plastic into high-quality scrubs is a step towards a healthier planet. 💚 Plastic Pollution Coalition (2023). Plastic Waste Facts & Stats: https://lnkd.in/eCHjQiKJ The industry's reliance on single-use plastics, justified by infection control and sterilisation costs, is a significant contributor to the healthcare sector's environmental impact. But are we focusing our innovation in the right direction? 🤔 This is a fascinating article/commentary by Jodi Sherman, MD an associate professor of anesthesiology at Yale School of Medicine and of epidemiology in environmental health sciences at Yale School of Public Health about single use plastics in Healthcare: https://lnkd.in/eqQZz4-B “This idea that we can't clean and reuse something safely is really a myth. I should also mention the current practice of labeling devices as being "single-use disposable." It's not an FDA label, it's an industry label. Manufacturers created this single-use label, meaning they can, in effect, manufacture obsolescence of these devices. They can drive the market toward more disposability.” I totally agree with this but the change needs to be driven by industry and incentives used to encourage manufacture of multiuse instruments, safely and efficiently. It's time for orthopaedic manufacturers to step up and embrace innovation that prioritises both patient safety and planetary health. Let's challenge the narrative and create a future where healthcare doesn't come at the cost of the environment. 🌎💚 #Sustainability #Orthopaedics #MedicalDevices #CircularEconomy #Biodegradable #Innovation #GreenHealthcare #EnvironmentalImpact

Mouldy food? No worries, the brown bin loves it! Confused about packaging? Just remove it, toss the food waste in the bin, and you're good to go. Why recycle food waste? Here's the Mighty impact: Easy. Sort your scraps, toss them in. Done. Good for the planet. Food waste becomes clean energy for homes. Fights climate change. Less landfill waste means fewer harmful gasses. ‘Be Mighty. Wow! Half a billion bottles were returned for recycling ♻ The Pros ⬆ : Less litter Cost neutral to consumer (if returned) The quality of recycled products is improved Increases closed-loop recycling No max number of bottles/cans per visit Not-for-profit scheme Enhanced corporate reputation for retailers Behavioural change regarding empty bottles and cans Higher footfall The Cons ⬇ : Higher costs turn consumers to lower-cost products (the unfair reality of sustainability initiatives) Higher footfall= potentially more journeys by car (higher emissions) Requires space to store containers without damage Waste is currently shipped outside Ireland (opens the door for local recycling plant) Does not fix the root problem of consumption and plastic pollution. Any comments? I would love to hear them! 💚 #DRS #recycling
We’ve hit a milestone! ♻️ Over half a billion bottles and cans have been returned since the launch of the #DepositReturnScheme in February. Our towns, villages and roadsides are much cleaner, with Irish Business Against Litter reporting a 30% reduction in drinks container litter since the scheme’s introduction. We’re making moves towards reaching our EU recycling targets because communities have recognised that small changes can make a big difference! #circulareconomy #recycling

It's Week 2 of our national recycling campaign. Our aim is to get 90% of the country recycling all 5 of our key recyclables, not 5% of the country recycling perfectly. Tins and cans are a pretty easy one for everyone to #recycleright For those of you in the 90%, just rinse and recycle! For those of you who want to recycle perfectly you can leave the lid on provided you: 1. only pull it off half way, 2. rinse it out, 3. push the lid back in, so in regions where they hand sort recycling their staff don't get injured As for the labels leave those on. (We had to remove them for our campaign so that we didn't single out individual brands.) Never stomp on your cans 🥫 as then they end up by accident in the paper recycling. And if you want to make it into the 1% category, pick up those empty drink cans on the side of the road or on the beach and take them home to recycle!
Can I recycle this from home? Yes. ✅ Recycled tins and cans can be turned back into new cans, again and again. ♻ Rinse out your dirty tins and cans and put them out for recycling. Head to our website to find out how to #RecycleRight: https://lnkd.in/ewZEMVw6

Let's make a difference! Reducing plastic use isn't just about convenience – it's about protecting our environment and health. By choosing sustainable alternatives, we can significantly decrease plastic waste and its harmful impact on our planet and our well-being. Together, we can create a cleaner, healthier future for all. #PlasticFreeJuly #ClimateChange
Plastic Free July founder Rebecca Prince-Ruiz OAM was interviewed for this great story in yesterday's Washington Post encouraging people to take part in Plastic Free July! "Her best advice for newbies: Don’t try to quit plastic cold turkey. Instead, start with a quick inventory of your plastic use — go through your fridge and pantry and trash — and choose one or two places to work on eliminating or reducing." https://lnkd.in/gXeNbmat
Going plastic-free is nearly impossible. These people are trying anyway.
