Ecosystem services—the physical processes performed by soils within an ecosystem—are well-known in agricultural settings, but how do we define and measure them in urban settings? Join Dr. Sara Acevedo, assistant professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, as she explores what it takes to measure the metals and other contaminants left in soil by human activity, the effect of soil homogeneity in an urban landscape, and to extend these studies out into areas of human development that have been ravaged by wildfires. Syntropic Podcast. A flight manual for Spaceship Earth Episode 3 SYSTEMS IN SYNTROPY. A global ecology of integrity and trust In this episode Christine hosts Cindy Forde, Author, Activist, and Entrepreneur in a powerful, confronting and passionate conversation discussing the practice of Syntropy. • What happens when we animate the critical elements of a Syntropic Enterprise? • How does it affect people, not just those actively participating but also those affected by the enterprise in the near and very far term? We hold this in tension with our current Molochian world, where the system is designed for win-lose - accumulation to the few at the cost of the many, extraction to extinction, colonisation and exploitation of people and life. Human history is bloody, cruel and violent. Yet so is our present. Click to listen here: https://lnkd.in/dPxSYJZ4 Don’t miss the insights from these two thought-leaders as they uncover the possibilities in a Syntropic future. Almost four years ago I had the chance to interview Csutora Mária, professor of Corvinus University of Budapest. In that episode of the podcast 'Zöld Egyenlőség' we talked about well-being. It is easy to figure out that material and personal well-being are different things - but did you know that both of them can be presented sustainably? What does this mean? 4 years, 4 green podcasters... In the anniversary episode of the podcast 'Zöld Egyenlőség' we discussed the four years behind us: the ups, downs and challenges that a green group would encounter nowadays. Does spreading green ideas have a sufficient impact on the people listening to it? How does the media supporting opposing ideas affect our goals? What can we do to make a better future (today) for all of us? I would like to recommend you this former episode of the podcast 'Zöld Egyenlőség'! It is about our sense of inertia about the climate crisis (and any other major problem in the world). The dragons of inaction can be countered by the bees of action - the psychological phenomena that can bring about change. If you are interested in what these bees might be, feel free to listen to the whole episode by clicking on this link: https://lnkd.in/dMH2FD5C #degrowth #economy #ecology #podcast #zöldegyenlőség #climatecrisis #sustainabledevelopment #greentransition

Brussels, we have a water problem! "Climate change will inevitably reduce water availability in Europe. Rising temperatures will put further pressure on water supplies, making Europe drier. At the same time, there are a number of issues with the way we manage water. For example, one of the obstacles we face in handling water more efficiently in Europe is the fact that many of the pipes we use are leaky. How can technology contribute to addressing this crisis? Of course, we are talking about smart water and digital water, which refers to the different technologies we should be using and exploiting to get information about where water is. It is usually in a pipe, and we don't know what is happening. With technology, we should be able to have all the information about water. There is no excuse for not knowing where the leaks are. The technologies are available." Antonia Zimmermann Chrysi Laspidou #eic #eicaccelerator

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) – what is it and why does it matter to all of us? Find out in this week’s ‘Sandbox’ FOMO5... In our latest Sandbox episode - ‘Urban Wonderlands: grey or green?’, our panel explores the importance of the recent BNG regulation, and how it can be applied throughout urban areas and across the UK. With 70% of nature in global decline, it is imperative that all industries take collective action to preserve biodiversity, particularly in urban areas. The new BNG policy is all about leaving nature in a measurably better state than it was before within new developments in the built environment. Aaron Grainger, Associate Director, UK Ecology and Biodiversity Management, Buro Happold, said: “Now, we need to assess a site and it is then assigned a numerical value based on lots of different parameters. You then look at what a development is going to provide in terms of biodiversity, which again is assigned a numerical parameter. And then you compare the two and the policy requires developers to leave nature in a 10 percent better state than before.” Following each monthly episode of ‘Sandbox’, there are weekly FOMO5s where we will pick short, engrossing excerpts (under five minutes) as ‘quick listens’ - we know how busy everyone is! These could be anything from valuable insights, thought-provoking elements, or even practical advice… The episode features Buro Happold engineering experts Colin Byrne and Aaron Grainger, special guest Tamsin Westhorpe, and our regular host Andy Duncan. You can also find the full episode, as well as its accompanying FOMO5s, on all the usual platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube.
