Applied Image MetaData+Knowledge Scientist at the Intersection of Embedded Metadata, Knowledge Graphs and Data-Centric AI
It's another: "What is this?" day! A great find from the archive project - a photo by my mother, Suzanne Brown in 1971 according to her metadata on the negative sleeve. Bing chat did know that this was an "enclosure made of netting supported by poles, which is likely used for containing fish or other aquatic animals" and it even spotted the shadow of the photographer. But this image is actually much more meaningful and a very important part of North Florida marine history. The GULF SPECIMEN MARINE LABORATORIES INC is located in Panacea, Florida and operated by Cypress Rudloe. His father, Jack Rudloe founded the lab with his late wife, Anne Rudloe. Jack is accomplished in many, many ways. When I showed Jack the photo, he, of course, instantly knew it was a photo of his very first 'Living Dock' built in 1970. Jack published a well known book called, "The Living Dock" which describes the habitats and curation of habitats around docks and in particular this dock in Dickerson Bay in Panacea, Florida in 1977. This dock was subsequently taken out by a hurricane and many others have come along as replacements since. But this was the very first incarnation and one written about extensively in "The Living Dock". It was Jack's very first attempt at building a 'fouling community' and other interesting things you will have to flip the image to read about! Would you expect any computer vision tool to ever be able to recognize the significance of this image - unless it was mapped into it's data in ways we aren't yet able to do without the use of knowledge graph technology? A lot of what makes images more interesting is the context around the image provided through first hand accounts by subject matter experts - things that are not necessarily visible but nevertheless extremely valuable. When this content can be linked to the image through graphing methods such that it can be findable across the web, this image suddenly takes on a whole new life and a value. This is image is now linked directly to Jack's book on Amazon, to the marine lab itself as well as connected through the graph to a much richer description of the elements in the photo. Coincidentally, I had I had a wonderful time talking with Ashleigh N. Faith this morning about how to describe (for machine understanding and findability) - hard to describe - images and this was one of the ones I discussed! Flip the image to read Jack's description further and explore the triples linked to the image. https://imgsnp.co/ud02p #metadatamatters #metadatamanagement #imagesnippets #marinetechnology #marineenvironment #livingdock #jackrudloe #cypressrudloe #bluemind

FACULTY OF USELESS KNOWLEDGE - #ALLSPECIESMATTER At FUK we consider robust #scientific #evidence that indicates we should do X, but keeps humanity continu doing Y 'useless'. This position of FUK and the Dombrovsky University makes us rather impopular in many scientific circles. There's heavy debate on the concept of 'uselessness' of knowledge compared to the preferred 'not used' knowledge. This is not a triviality or word play. FUK considers knowledge that is willfully ignored 'useless', 'not used' doesn't do justice to humanity's stupidity. An example is found in the #AllSpeciesMatter concept launched by FUK years ago: ecological evidence shows that all #species, no matter what size or cuteness, play a significant role in the #ecosystem. This is a fundamental fact of #life on #earth. Yet humans prefer #photography contests to decide which (photo of a) species is the best of the year. Oh and don't forget #NoNatureNoFuture Pictured are nominees for the #Wildlife Photograph of the year (links in comments)
