Slope stability is unpredictable — or is it? The risk of landslides threatens roads, rails, homes, and lives. Being able to forecast where and when slopes will fail means giving communities the power to keep infrastructure and people safe. In this episode, we talk with civil engineer Dr. Ning Lu about his experience studying slope stability. Learn about the breakthrough slope stability predictive formula he helped develop. Did you know that #engineering has a best kept secret? It’s called the observational method, and it’s a geotechnical approach that helps us deliver amazing structures with less cost, carbon and risk. 🙌 It was used developed by now retired Mott MacDonald star Alan Powderham and our global lead on geotechnics , Tony O'Brien has just written THE book on it! With Tony we are developing some guidunace on the sort of contracts that best support the Observational Method. Guess what? The target contract is ideal. And guess which standard form of contract has offered a well developed standard form for a target contract for the last 30 years?! Tough One? Ask here is unsure! In the latest episode of our Heritage #podcast series with Engineering Matters, we talk to some of the experts who have used this method on iconic projects like the Channel Tunnel, Boston’s Big Dig and the new Wembley Stadium. 🎧 Listen now and learn how the observational method has evolved over the years and why it’s still relevant today. 👇

Such an interesting episode! In geotechnical engineering, it's not always that a series of formulae could solve the ground problems. With the Observational Method, there is flexibility in allowing for design modifications as construction progresses based on the response between the ground and structures.
