Last week, OSRL joined the Petroleum Association of Japan 's Oil Spill Workshop 2024! 🌊 The workshop focused on the critical task of developing response and preparedness strategies, leveraging insights drawn from major incidents. The chosen theme, "Oil Spill Prevention during a Civil War, Recent Oil Spill Response, and Effective Public Relations," underscores the imperative for robust strategies in these diverse situations. OSRL was represented by our Science, Technology and Stakeholder Engagement Manager, Rob Holland , who was a keynote speaker. During his presentation, Dr. Holland explored the intricacies of oil spill response in today's dynamic landscape, shedding light on the escalating challenges and evolving scenarios within the industry. Dr. Holland's in-depth analysis covered key industry shifts, including the expansion of oil exploration into remote and politically unstable regions. The global transition to sustainable fuels, such as ammonia, was emphasized, highlighting the need for cooperative efforts to establish safety protocols. Public perception emerged as a crucial aspect during the workshop, with a spotlight on the impact of media coverage. Dr. Holland addressed challenges such as talent shortages in spill response personnel, negative industry perceptions, and the pressure to adopt media-favorable strategies. The discussion also extended to the imperative need for transparency, engagement, and the continuous evolution of response toolkits, especially amidst technological advancements. With only four days to go we are looking forward to partnering with the EIC (Energy Industries Council) at this year's SPE Offshore Europe where we will be discussing our cutting edge technologies and contributing to the wider conversation around effective decarbonisation. Ross McHardy, Group Director, will be hosting a session entitled 'Small Steps for a Bigger Change: Decarbonisation Through Technology'. The event on Tuesday, September 5 (10.30am-11am) at Aberdeen’s P&J Live will also feature other industry leaders. This seminar is part of the Collaboration Zone, an initiative organised by the EIC (Energy Industries Council). 👏 That’s a wrap for OGMP 2.0’s annual conference! Three days of collaboration on how industry can tap into a methane data revolution to #CutMethane. Thank you to representatives of the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0’s member companies for gathering in Madrid, Spain to advance transparency and accountability across the oil and gas sector. The conference’s final day focused on: 📊 Understanding the array of available methane measurement technologies available for companies to better understand their emissions. 🛰️ Discussing the role of satellites in supporting methane action – notably as the next generation of methane-detecting satellites like MethaneSAT prepares for launch. 🌍 Highlighting the UN Environment Programme's Methane Alert and Response System (MARS), which puts satellite data directly into the hands of governments and OGMP 2.0 members to take action. You can’t manage what you don’t measure, and the UN Environment Programme's OGMP 2.0 provides a powerful framework for credible measurement, reporting and verification of companies’ emissions – with the end goal of ultimately driving down methane across the supply chain.
