Recently, Manfredi Caltagirone, Head of the UN Environment Programme's IMEO, addressed the Fourth China Methane Summit. Credible data is essential for helping #China meet its #methane goals by deploying solutions at speed and scale. The presentation highlighted IMEO's role providing open, reliable, and actionable data to empower stakeholders to take methane action. ➡️ He also highlighted the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 as the only comprehensive, measurement-based reporting framework for the sector. ➡️ Additionally, he spoke about the Methane Alert and Response System, the first global satellite detection and notification system providing actionable data on very large methane emissions around the world. ℹ️ The conference brought together policy, industry, and S&T experts. Special thanks to the organizers: the China Climate Investment and Financing Association, China Energy Conservation Consulting Co., Ltd., and the Environmental Defense Fund. In the Government of Canada's recent report ‘𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟱𝟬: 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲’, there is a key message that ‘collecting and reporting activity data more frequently can improve understanding of emissions’. The report continues: “These priorities for research and knowledge synthesis and mobilization would improve understanding of Canada’s GHG emissions and trends, as well as enable Canada to contribute to international GHG monitoring efforts, such as the International Methane Emissions Observatory initiative of the UN Environment Programme and the global stocktake process of the Paris Agreement. As well, the priorities help us make 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗮’𝘀 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.” At the upcoming Methane Mitigation Canada Summit in 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗴𝗮𝗿𝘆, 𝗔𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮, from 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟯𝟬 - 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮, over 150 industry leaders will meet to collaborate on innovative solutions to measure, monitor and mitigate methane emissions, ensuring attendees depart equipped with the knowledge to seamlessly integrate improved methane management practices within their organizations. I look forward to reading the final conclusions of this G7 ministerial meeting. But despite these efforts, it's hard to be optimistic when you consider that the world has never consumed as much coal as it does today, with a peak of 8.5 billion tonnes in 2023, and that many countries continue to invest in new coal-fired power plant projects.

We, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung RECAP (KAS RECAP), are very happy to faciliate this excellent discussion today on the role of #carbonmarkets in Asia’s #decarbonisation efforts. Together with our partners International Energy Agency (IEA) and ICAP, we are kickstarting 3 days of discussions at the #AsiaClimateSummit in Tokyo. There is no doubt that carbon pricing instruments are part of the solution. However, especially #CBAM received a lot of criticism - some of it unfair in my view, but some also justified and constructive: European Commission has not been able to communicate CBAM’s details sufficiently. Plenty of room for more public diplomacy; Generally, not the entire world believes that carbon markets are the best way to meet NDCs and reach #netzero, but the EU is allegedly coercing all to enfore a carbon price; There are also questions about the use of CBAM revenue sharing. Nonetheless, even critics agree that CBAM will accelarate the decarbonisation of heavy industry. That alone is already worth it! Looking forward to 2 more days of this!
Exciting start to the IEA-ICAP-KAS carbon pricing dialogues in Tokyo! 🌍💬 Experts are diving into discussions about implementing carbon pricing in Asia-Pacific regions and exploring the implications of CBAM. #ClimateAction #CarbonPricing #AsiaPacificDialogue International Energy Agency (IEA) International Carbon Action Partnership

⏱️ "With advanced monitoring, measuring, and tracking technologies like MethaneSAT now available, policymakers and industry have powerful tools at their disposal. This radical level of transparency eliminates excuses and demands immediate action." - Helen Spence-Jackson, EDF Europe Executive Director . Powerful words which gave me chills! . #eu #methane #fossilfuels #climatechange #edf #methanesat
🚨 Exciting Milestone in Climate Action: the first-ever EU regulation to reduce #methane emissions has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union and will enter into force 20 days later. This significant step in the global effort to reduce methane emissions sets strict new curbs on emissions from #FossilFuel operations across EU Member States. Tough standards will also apply to imports from the many oil, coal and natural gas exporters that supply to the EU. Flavia Sollazzo, Senior Director of EU Energy Transition at EDF Europe welcomed the occasion, but cautioned "the regulation's success hinges entirely on rigorous implementation. The real work starts now: Holding the industry accountable is crucial, and we expect Member States to act swiftly." Helen Spence-Jackson, Executive Director at EDF Europe, emphasised the role of emission data transparency in holding emitters to account: "With advanced monitoring, measuring, and tracking technologies like MethaneSAT now available, policymakers and industry have powerful tools at their disposal. This radical level of transparency eliminates excuses and demands immediate action." We will continue to collaborate with lawmakers and industry to ensure accountability. As Helen points out, "this regulation is a framework for this type of collaboration, paving the way for real progress in the fight against #ClimateChange." Read more: https://lnkd.in/dyNPhg8F

Breaking news! The EU just finalized its first-ever methane emissions law. This regulation sets strict limits on methane from fossil fuel operations across Europe and from imports. It’s a major step towards reducing our carbon footprint and fighting climate change head-on. By holding both EU and international suppliers accountable, this law aims to cut down on one of the most potent greenhouse gases. Let’s work together for a cleaner, greener future! 🌱💚

These commitments are great and important, but there is still the issue of developed countries growing low carbon solutions and at the other end of the spectrum many of the under developed countries expanding the most carbon intensive sources . We share the same air so we should be open to sharing better forms of energy too (export hydrogen and LNG vs coal).
