👏 UN Environment Programme Executive Director Inger Andersen announced yesterday that 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan will host World Environment Day 2026 focused on climate change. ➡️ Curbing methane emissions is the single fastest way to slow global warming as we decarbonize, and this represents a critical opportunity to highlight the urgent need for methane action to achieve climate goals. 🛰 Credible data is essential to #CutMethane, and UNEP's IMEO provides open, reliable, and actionable data to individuals with the power to take action on methane. 🔗 Read the whole statement here: https://lnkd.in/gGWm2e2w

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) stated in 2018 that the world needs to reach net zero by around 2050 to meet the Paris Agreement's target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. The 2050 deadline was included in the Glasgow Climate Pact, agreed at COP26 in 2021. Governments are increasingly accepting net-zero targets in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). DID YOU KNOW? The 1.5°C climate target wasn't selected based on its scientific validity but rather for its convenience. Initially, a 1990 report suggested that capping global warming at 1°C would be safer than aiming for 2°C. However, as early as 1996, when achieving 1°C seemed improbable, the European Union's Council of Ministers adopted the 2°C target, later endorsed by the UN in 2010. During the negotiations for the Paris climate agreement in 2015, nations threatened by rising sea levels pushed for a more ambitious goal. With global temperatures already around 1°C higher, 1.5°C was settled upon. Yet, a 2018 IPCC report cautioned that this target is not entirely safe, as evident from current climate impacts like extreme weather events and coral reef degradation.

The Paris Agreement sets out a global framework to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees. It also aims to strengthen countries’ ability to deal with climate change impacts and support them in their efforts. The agreement stipulates that the transport sector must move towards zero emissions since it is currently one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas production. Each country has its own Paris Agreement targets, which it must reach by a series of set dates. At Scania, we have set ambitious emissions reduction targets that have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative and are in line with the Paris Agreement. #ParisAgreement #Scaniasciencebasedtargets #Climatechange #ScaniaSA

📚 New #publication 💡 Supporting the Paris Agreement through international cooperation Many sector-level cooperative initiatives involving both national governments and non-state actors were launched around the 2021 Glasgow climate conference (COP26). However, there have been questions about whether and to what extent these initiatives could substantially contribute to achieving the Paris Agreement’s goal to limit global warming to 1.5 °C. The authors Takeshi Kuramochi, Andrew Deneault, Sander Chan and Natalie Pelekh examine the prospects of the 14 Glasgow sector initiatives by investigating their aggregate mitigation ambition under current national signatories and the institutional robustness of each initiative. Paris Agreement Adopted since 2015, is an international treaty signed by almost all 196 countries, focused on combating climate change through voluntary commitments to reduce emissions, adapt to climate impacts and provide financial support to developing nations. Its main goal is to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
