An article I wrote about OGMP 2.0. If you go above and beyond regulatory requirements, you should check it out.
In March 2024, we saw two big announcements in the Voluntary Initiatives space. Kiwetinohk Energy Corporation became the first Canadian based company to join the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (“OGMP 2.0”), the United Nation’s flagship methane reporting framework. Following that, OGMP 2.0 announced ExxonMobil’s commitment as well. Joining 130 other oil and gas companies with assets in 70 countries, OGMP 2.0 member companies now represent almost 40% of global oil and gas production and over 80% of LNG flows. From 2022 to 2023 OGMP 2.0 saw 86% growth in participation, including some of the largest global oil and gas players. So why OGMP 2.0? OGMP 2.0 is one of 24 voluntary initiatives available to the energy industry, as highlighted in our Voluntary Emissions Reduction Initiatives in 2023. What is driving the growth in OGMP 2.0 participation? 🤝 The Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 welcomes Austria-based OMV among its members working to #CutMethane with credible data. 📈 OMV describes itself as an integrated energy, fuels & feedstock, and chemicals & materials company, and its membership represents a major step towards methane transparency, especially in Europe where OGMP 2.0 now covers nearly 90% of oil and gas production. “We are thrilled to welcome OMV to the Partnership,” said Giulia Ferrini, OGMP 2.0 Programme Manager. “This is a valuable step towards expanding methane accountability and transparency across the industry. As customers, investors and governments demand stronger methane performance, we hope OMV’s commitment will inspire others to join OGMP 2.0 and adopt a high standard of emissions reporting and management.” 🌍 OGMP 2.0 is the UN Environment Programme's flagship reporting and mitigation programme, and is the only comprehensive, measurement-based international reporting framework for the oil and gas sector. 🔍 OGMP 2.0 covers over 40% of global oil and gas production, helping drive transparency and accountability at scale.
