🚨🛰️ Data from the UN Environment Programme's Methane Alert and Response System is helping drive transparency and accountability to #CutMethane. 🔺 Bloomberg's Aaron Clark highlights persistent emissions in the Gulf of Thailand, observed by MARS via satellite and provided to the relevant government and industry stakeholders to enable action. 🔺 “Given the scale and persistence of these emissions, swift action is needed to address them,” said IMEO Head Manfredi Caltagirone. 🔺 Emissions at the site – an offshore platform in the Gulf of Thailand – have been observed at least 60 times since 2013, with an average emissions rate of 4,650 kilograms of methane an hour. ➡️ Reducing emissions is essential for driving rapid climate action, and credible data – like that provided by IMEO through MARS – is needed to ensure commitments and translated into concrete progress. Cutting methane emissions is crucial to keeping global temperature rises to 1.5 degrees. As a short-lived climate pollutant, it’s 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. So we welcome the Global Methane Forum, taking place 18-21 March, where industry leaders are gathered in Geneva to highlight methane mitigation activities and share information on potential solutions. The event will help play a crucial role in supporting the transition toward methane reduction and supports the work of the Global Methane Pledge, which now has more than 155 global signatories. Subnational governments also have a vital role in reducing methane emissions. #Under2Coalition co-chair for North America, California, has launched a Subnational Action Methane Coalition to share knowledge with other states and regions on best practice to reach ambitious climate targets. 15 governments have joined this Coalition, and we’d love to hear from other governments with an interest in this area. Three days to go before our Climate Week NYC event Following our widely reported revelations about the extent of methane leaks in Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, we will be hosting a live online webinar at Climate Week NYC entitled ‘Why the World Needs Independent Monitoring of Man-Made Methane Emissions’. Click here to register: https://lnkd.in/eTtEGGvU Methane is the fastest-growing greenhouse gas, and one that has more than 80 times the warming power of CO2 in its first 20 years in the atmosphere. Despite this, and industry continues to under-report its emissions, making the need for independent, third-party, unbiased monitoring essential. The webinar will feature a panel discussion in which Antoine Halff. and Katya Ghosh of Kayrros will discuss methane monitoring and other topics with senior figures in science, academia and politics. The webinar will also include a progress report on the progress of current initiatives aimed at reducing methane emissions. This is a fantastic chance to get up to speed on the latest science around, and strides already being made towards, methane mitigation strategies. On the panel: - Johana Dunlop, Moderator, Carbon Connect International, Advisor - Anne-Sophie Corbeau, Center of Global Energy Policy, Columbia University - Evan Sherwin, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory - Robert Cekuta, Hudson Partners, former US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Date: Thursday, September 21, 2023 Time: 11AM-12PM EDT Location: OnlineClick here to register: https://lnkd.in/eTtEGGvU #climate #methane #climateweeknyc

UNEP's International Methane Emissions Observatory launched its 2023 Annual Report, An eye on methane: The road to radical transparency, alongside a beta version of the IMEO Methane Data platform. The publication takes stock of progress harnessing an imminent data revolution that can accelerate methane reduction on a global scale. Credible data has the potential to deliver the transparency needed for rapid climate action, but only if reconciled, integrated and put into the hands of those who can act on it. The International Methane Emissions Observatory’s third annual report provides decision makers a framework of action to track and monitor methane emissions to plan targeted and ambitious action for their mitigation. EIA Climate Campaigner Kim O’Dowd is tomorrow (8 May) due to address the House of Lords Committee of Environment and Climate Change as to whether the UK is on track to achieve its reduction target under the Global Methane Pledge. A major issue of concern is the invisible emission of methane gas arising from fossil fuel extraction - but how can you measure what's invisible? Kim recently accompanied EIA partner organisation the Clean Air Task Force (CATF) on a field trip in in Stockbridge, Hampshire to visually document the unseen with a very specialised device, an Optical Gas Imaging Camera, which reveals emissions by detecting radiation differences between the gas and its surroundings. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, responsible for about one-third of current global warming. Methane emissions need to be reduced by 34 per cent by 2030 to have a chance to keep within the 1.5°C limit. Methane emissions come from three main sectors: agriculture, waste and energy - the latter being the focus of investigation for CATF and EIA. 🔥 More information on methane at https://lnkd.in/e6TEBa86 #climatechange #methane #fossilfuels #oil #gas #coal

A new satellite named MethaneSAT is set to launch in 2023 to help tackle methane leaks, which is a significant contributor to global warming. The Environmental Defense Fund is leading this project with the aim of detecting and measuring methane emissions from space. This mission will provide vital data and insights for governments, businesses, and the public, and encourage actions towards reducing methane emissions. #MethaneSAT #MethaneLeaks #ClimateChange https://buff.ly/3P0crKF

On the 1st ever #CleanEnergyDay, Executive Secretary Tatiana Molcean highlights the urgent need to cut emissions of #Methane, which has a warming effect 80 times greater than #CO2 over a 20-year period. Available tools, including those developed at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, can support tangible measures in the #fossilfuels sector to deliver near-term results in line with the #GlobalMethanePledge. The 2024 #GlobalMethaneForum organized by UNECE & the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) in cooperation with Global Methane Hub & Climate & Clean Air Coalition in #Geneva on 18-21 March will convene governments, industry leaders and key stakeholders to promote replicable methane mitigation successes and mobilize action to reduce #emissions. According to a recent study published in Nature, the U.S. oil and gas sector emits three times more methane than current government estimates. The authors estimate the additional emissions cost $9.3 billion annually because of their impact on global warming and air quality. On March 8, the Biden Administration took a major step towards curtailing methane emissions from the oil and gas sector by publishing its expansive rule to reduce the potent climate pollutant. While this represents progress, some aspects are still absent, including the omission of relatively inexpensive monitoring requirements essential for ensuring clean and efficient flare combustion. We’re seeing unprecedented increases in atmospheric methane, which is 80x stronger than carbon dioxide in global warming effects. The methane world needs more good data, and efficient and reliable ways to get it. We’ve got some great technology for sensing methane remotely, from a 10 km² area to the global scale, but the tough question for these low-resolution data sets is: Where’s the Methane Coming From? Come check out my poster (2152) at #AGU from 8:30-12:30 to see how we can tell where methane is coming from using wind and stable isotopes in Alberta, Canada.
