Why is addressing methane waste in the waste sector important? Because it accounts for 20% of all anthropogenic methane emissions. 🔴 However, this focus must not detract from essential mitigation efforts within the fossil fuel industry. 💡 The oil and gas sector holds the largest, fastest, and most cost-effective potential for methane reduction. For this, it needs real-world and empirical methane emissions data, which IMEO provides through initiatives like the: 🔺 Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) and 🔺 Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) IMEO is a core-implementing partner of the Global Methane Pledge, which aims to curb methane emissions by 30% by 2030. As we advance mitigation across various sectors including waste, ensuring the fossil fuel industry fulfills its commitments made at COP28 is crucial. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dc-mCFih

As a founding member of the #GlobalMethanePledge and a #GlobalMethaneChampion, #Canada has today proposed new #methane regulations that demonstrate significant methane reduction action on a global scale. Canada must keep its commitment from #COP27 to #CutMethane pollution 75% by 2030. #CutMethaneCA. Let’s see how they plan to do it 👇 ✅ A comprehensive leak detection and repair program, that includes quarterly inspections, monthly screenings, and annual audits. ✅ A ban on venting, including from equipment like pneumatic devices, and a new requirement to reduce flaring of associated gas. ✅ A performance standard which operators can opt into as an alternative to the requirements described for venting and fugitive emissions. Canada’s rules would go into effect by 2027, just in time to try to meet Canada’s methane goals for the oil and gas sector. #CutMethaneCA https://lnkd.in/e5B9fQtQ

🌍 The EU just took a huge step to curb climate change by tackling methane emissions! 🚀 Methane is 30x more potent than CO2, making this a critical move for our planet's future. 🌱 🔍 New rules require energy operators to measure and report methane emissions at the source, with independent verification to ensure accuracy. 🏭 📊 Countries must inventory active wells and create plans to mitigate leaks from inactive ones. Even closed coal mines are under scrutiny to prevent methane release. 🛢️ 👷♂️ National authorities will conduct regular inspections, and operators must detect and repair leaks within specific timeframes. ⏱️ 🌐 Global transparency is boosted with new monitoring tools for methane emissions from imported oil, gas, and coal. 🌍 📅 These regulations take effect 21 days after publication, with a review set for 2028.📅 🔗 Click on the link below to read more about this important development! https://lnkd.in/dcBFjYf6 Follow us: Karmactive #ClimateAction #Sustainability #MethaneEmissions #EnvironmentalPolicy #EURegulations #GreenEnergy

New insights from Sky News and Kayrros expose the widespread and unchecked methane leaks from oil and gas operations around the world. These leaks, which are up to 80 times more potent than CO2, are a major contributor to climate change. The importance of mitigating methane emissions cannot be understated, as recognised in recent agreements such as the Global Methane Pledge. Companies can act now, with an MiQ Certification providing the granular data required to drastically reduce their methane emissions. Read the article in full here: https://bit.ly/3RJbgCd

Important methane reduction pledges will be made at COP 28 at the country and company level. Andrea Clabough and I discuss why more will be needed to make these pledges effective: agreement on an acceptable group of MMRV benchmarks, financial support to low income, high emitting countries, and more importantly, market-based mechanisms that penalize producers who have not made methane reduction commitments or who do not adhere to an acceptable standard.
