What is a Courageous Conversation? 🗣 Daniel Robinson, Director of Transitional Programs and part of our DEI initiatives at MCHS, describes it as "intentionally giving space to communicate about complex issues of social justice, race, and privilege among co-workers." These conversations often require being bold and open to sharing one's own experiences, with a willingness to hear about the experiences of others, too. "These discussions benefit everyone within our agency", explains Robinson. We recognize that everyone is unique and encourage that they always be seen and heard. While these conversations can sometimes be challenging, they are worth it, because they help to create a sense of value and belonging in our workplace. Ultimately, as we seek to eliminate prejudice and systemic racism within our community, these Courageous Conversations are both empowering and effective. #BlackHistoryMonth #mchs #thisisfamily #CourageousConversations #michigannonprofit

During our regional diversity workshop today, I had the privilege of participating in an insightful and thought-provoking session led by Jeffrey Wotherspoon (CfPAC, ILM). The workshop focused on racism and encouraged us to consider the issue from a workplace perspective. While addressing racism in the context of the children and families we serve is crucial, it is equally important to acknowledge and discuss the experiences of our colleagues within our teams, and the wider Family Justice system. By expanding the conversation, I continue to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges my colleagues face daily, ranging from prejudice and ignorance to overt racism. It is disheartening to realize that we still have a significant journey ahead in creating a more inclusive and equitable work environment. One thing is certain: remaining on the sideline is not an option. #InclusionMatters #DiversityAndEquity #AntiRacism

When humans summit to their highest point.... I met to wondrous Francesca Findlater OBE of No Going Back a week ago. At the end of the meeting we decided the best way to collaborate initially was for EmpowerAbility to have some presence at HMP Wandsworth. At No Going Back’s next workshop titled "Create Your Profile". One week later there was a chance for seven random volunteers from all walks of life to meet at the front gates of HMP Wandsworth. To be allies and collaborate and to serve 14 men with impactful confidence boosting exercises. From a young 84 year old to a solicitor (not a criminal lawyer - added emphasis). From a Global Banker to Criminology student. From a Management Consultant to myself, Founder & CEO. The diversity of volunteers was matched equally by the diversity of returning citizens. We met, Chefs, Construction Workers, Entrepreneurs, Financial Consultants. We met all ages and diverse backgrounds. But above all we met humans who all wanted to return as citizens. To build a life without punishment along with the absence of crime. In my opinion, allyship, humanity and collaboration at their finest represent the pinnacle of collective human effort and solidarity. Allyship is about standing in solidarity with marginalised communities. Advocating for their rights and actively working to dismantle systems of oppression or bias. It involves listening, learning and taking action to support those who face discrimination and perpetual injustice. Humanity encompasses empathy, compassion and understanding towards others. It's about recognising the inherent worth and dignity of every individual. Regardless of their background and striving to create a more just and equitable world for all. Collaboration involves working together across different backgrounds, perspectives and experiences to achieve common goals. It's about recognising that we are stronger together. That by combining our efforts, we can create meaningful change. When allyship, humanity and collaboration come together. They create a powerful force for positive transformation. Whether it's advocating for social justice. Addressing environmental issues. Fostering inclusivity in our communities. These values serve as guiding principles for creating a better world for everyone. So that we can all take breath, so that our worlds can breathe easier. With LOF (Love Over Fear) 🙏🏽 & 💜 #EmbraceProgress #ElevatePotential #SeekDiscomfort #LoveOverFear A picture of volunteers and staff from No Going Back and Jazz Singh✨ of EmpowerAbility outside HMP Wandsworth.

CREATING EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES Empowering intellectually disabled individuals to advocate for themselves is a powerful way to promote their rights and inclusion. This means facilitating the creation of groups where intellectually disabled people can come together, share their experiences, and advocate for their rights. It follows that providing training in leadership, public speaking, and confidence building is important. The National Adoption Association (NAA) team recently participated in a transformative two-day training with Joyce James Consulting titled “Groundwater Analysis of Racial Inequities” and “Turning the Mirror Inward.” This enlightening experience provided an opportunity for the team to explore how, without a racial equity lens, even well-intentioned leaders can unknowingly perpetuate institutional racism, leading to racial disparities in programs and services. Through the development of a shared understanding of systemic racism, the team is now better equipped to build more equitable systems, strengthen community partnerships, and drive meaningful change. #RacialEquity #TransformativeLeadership #GroundwaterAnalysis #StructuralChange #EquityInAction #SocialJustice #CommunityImpact
