Narrative on Dublin Airport is centred on passenger numbers. Ireland's population will grow 43% to 6.7m (CSO) 2018-2050, it's already up 40+% on when T1 was opened. Hubs (broadly) work better at scale i.e. the more (direct) flights we can get into Dublin the better ("fly like a NERD" and train the rest). As an island of migrants (in & out) and flyers we (and Fingal CoCo) should be asking how quickly we can get heavy rail connections from Belfast, Cork, Galway etc. directly into Dublin airport? In terms of limits now is a good time to set Ireland's aviation #CarbonBudget? As airliners get greener and go electric they will carry more people further on less CO2. Let's give our lessors and airlines an incentive to base cleaner greener aircraft here rather than a disincentive with an artificial "passenger" limit we know we can't meet(see pop. growth). As to alternate airports let's focus aviation investment on Shannons long runways where rail and motorway are close and we can already see deep water port and hydrogen futures.
daa, the operator of Dublin and Cork airports, has unveiled the details of 20 environmental sustainability initiatives being rolled out at Dublin and Cork Airports in Ireland. These initiatives are intended to accelerate both airports’ climate and sustainability-related ambitions, including achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 at the latest. The projects are also matched by a planned investment of more than €400m (US$430m) as part of the company’s recent Infrastructure Application to Fingal County Council.

The annual ITM | Institute of Travel Management conference is just around the corner, and with it comes the chance to explore and discuss some of the burning topics in business travel today. One subject in particular, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), is something that I am already passionate about – more specifically, the question of offsetting vs. investing. So, I thought I might break it down. Firstly, offsetting, which has had many projects and methods thrown at us over the last few years, but some might say is this just green-washing. Investing, on the other hand, means supporting sustainable alternatives to conventional jet fuels, like Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Made from renewable sources, SAF slashes carbon footprints and serves as a direct reduction of emissions. So, should you offset or invest? Well, it depends on what is most important to you and your business goals. By investing in SAF, you can cut carbon emissions at their source – while offsetting merely balances the emissions you cause. It also depends on your budget. Investing in SAF is pricier now, but it does promise a more sustainable future. While offsetting costs can vary greatly and is a short-term fix. In my opinion, SAF investment is the proactive choice, directly curbing aviation emissions – but what do you think? If you’re interested in SAF and offsetting carbon emissions, you can learn more in London Chamber of Commerce and Industry Greenskies report: https://lnkd.in/ea_9mZyW #ACETravel #ITM #SustainableAviation #OffsetVsInvest #GreenSkies

Transition to Sustainability in the European Union Aviation System! I. Net-Zero The European Green Deal and the fit for 55 package have placed a spotlight on achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 across all sectors and reaching 55 % of this goal by 2030 II. Aviation Aviation is considered a ‘hard-to-abate’ sector , with a high dependency on liquid fossil fuels and slow fleet turnover times, and with aircrafts having lifespans of around 30 years. In 2022, aviation emissions accounted for 2 % of global energy-related CO2 emissions. However, the sector’s overall impact on global warming is estimated at 2.6 times that of CO2 alone, due to the emission of nitrogen oxides, sulphate aerosols, particulates and water vapour, although the level of uncertainty for the non-CO2 effects is eight times larger than that for CO2 III. Post-Covid With air travel having fully recovered from the pandemic and even surpassing pre-pandemic demand, an annual growth rate of 4.7 % in passenger traffic has been anticipated, with carriers requiring nearly 44 000 new commercial aeroplanes by 2043 and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions potentially tripling by 2050 IV. Tech From a technological point of view, the systematic literature review revealed that the most promising zero-carbon propulsion technologies for sustainable aviation, electric and hydrogen are still far from the required technological readiness level for widespread deployment. V. Sustainable Aviation Fuels This situation positions sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) as a crucial element of the transition and the only practical way to decarbonise aviation while other technologies are being developed. However, SAF production needs to be urgently increased. In 2024, SAFs are expected to represent just 0.53 % of the aviation fuel required VI. More than Tech However, achieving net-zero emissions in aviation by 2050 will require more than just technological innovation. The analysis highlights the crucial role of governmental measures, including regulation, research and development investment, subsidies, taxation and promoting alternatives to flying, along with communication strategies to shift public perception and encourage less energy-intensive consumption habits. Green taxes can be an important measure, integrating environmental costs associated with air travel into the pricing of flights VII. Systemic and transformative approach The analysis concludes that incorporating a place-based, systemic and transformative approach to the transition to sustainability in the European sociotechnical aviation system is essential, and this requires coordinated efforts at the local, national and European levels Check out the report by the European Commission here: https://lnkd.in/ebzxqtGK #innovation #aviation #sustainability #climate #hydrogen #systems #systemschange #transformativeinnovation #netzero
