In the world of business, there's a powerful lesson we can learn from the art of gardening. Just as a gardener nurtures their plants, we need to cultivate our corporate culture with the same level of care and attention. Think of your company's core values as the seeds of your business. These aren't just words on a page, they're the essence of what your company stands for, the potential of what it can become. But these seeds need more than just to be planted; they need to be nurtured, watered, and tended to. It's not enough for leaders to simply announce these values and expect a thriving culture to blossom. Like a garden, a company's culture requires constant attention and care. It's in the everyday actions, the way we conduct our meetings, how we recognise and reward our employees, and how we truly see and appreciate their contributions. So, let's take this lesson to heart. Let's commit to actively cultivating our company's culture and make our core values a breathing part of our daily business life. Because when we do, we're not just growing a business, we're growing a community, a place where people feel valued, where they can thrive and contribute to something greater than themselves. #CultureMatters #WorkplaceCulture #PeopleFirst #LeadwithValues

Transform Subject Matter Experts Into Professional Trainers| Design and Implement Learning Solutions for Business Results|Author|Professional Speaker|Lifelong Learner|Love Ancient Wisdom|Practice Work-Life Balance
This morning, there was an internal dialogue between the CEO and the Gardener in me. 👨💼 CEO in Me: You have a Leadership Development Proposal for the MNC and an HRD Corp Train-The-Trainer Proposal for the private university. Moreover, your presentation slides for the Board Meeting are not finalized. Do you have time for gardening? Your Bangladeshi gardener friend Ali can take care of it for about RM 100. 🌱 Gardener in Me: The CEO will always find enough work to fill 25 hours daily! He may sound smart, but does he know what matters most to you? He might not even really care. All this talk about 'Work-Life Balance' seems only for meeting the Social Dimension of ESG Reporting. He must understand that 'not everything that matters can be measured, and not everything that is measured matters'. If your father were alive, he'd call him 'Muttal' (idiot) for equating your joy of gardening with paying RM 100 to your friend Ali. Yes, the business proposals and board meetings are important. The deadline is next Wednesday. You can always get back to that work on Monday. If you wait to finish all the tasks the CEO expects, you will never have time to do what matters most to you. I'm glad I listened to the Gardener in me. Do your CEO, or the CEO in you, know what matters most to you?

Organizational leadership in this era requires an active stance of cutting through the cascading unproductive busy-ness and the persistent noise of distractions and disruptions for you and your team(s). Research has been proposing the concept of “Poet Gardener” being the leadership model of the future… In part, it is to be reflecting and thoughtful and creatively inspire and communicate in new and innovative ways against the grain of the normal rules, that inspires and compels and challenges and comforts… And in part, because the garden of life and organizational life is growing and sprouting exponentially around with both weeds and beautiful trees, and there needs to be a diligent and careful and ongoing multi-faceted approach to dealing with each plant, each section in contextually appropriate ways using appropriate adaptive tools. One doesn’t prune the roses using a lawnmower. And one doesn’t mow the lawn using a watering can. One doesn’t (any longer) lead a team using command and control, and one doesn’t foster mental health using an (another) app. The leadership model of the future will look like a gardener who moves at a different pace (slower not faster), with a different perspective, carefully and attentively empowering each plant and life force in the garden to grow and flourish and be in balance with the rest. #leadership #futureproof #poetgardener #organizationalleadership

I FOUND LEADERSHIP IN MY GARDEN! Because believe it or not, leadership is a lot like tending to a beautiful garden. Imagine if gardener's started beating up plants because they didn't deliver results on time! Berating them on how quickly they sprouted or the size of their petals. Wouldn't work, right! A Sunflower takes longer than a Rose that takes longer than a Tulip. Well, so is judging someone on your team based on standard timelines or comparing their growth to others. Sure, certain standards are required. But judging a fish based on it's ability to fly won't work, will it! Instead, embrace diversity, foster an environment of support, and watch your team bloom in their own unique ways. Leadership is not about barking orders; it's about watering the roots of creativity, pruning the weeds of doubt, and making sure everyone gets enough metaphorical sunshine. And hey, if a bad joke or two acts as fertilizer for morale, well, why not? At the heart of it all, leadership is basically about fostering an environment for growth, where ideas can bloom and everyone can flourish. It isn't about keeping everyone in line, but rather guiding them towards their full potential. So, leaders, throw on your gardening overalls, grab your watering can of encouragement, and cultivate success together with your team. Because just like a well-tended garden, a well-nurtured team will blossom into something truly extraordinary. I love helping people to bring out their best selves and highest potential, through mindfulness. To know more, reach out to us at Llama or get in touch with my team.

The idea of “firm culture” as a shared set of values goes back nearly 75 years. But the word “culture” has an original meaning that I like more. In the context of horticulture, culture is oriented not towards the present, but towards the future: “to CREATE conditions suitable for growth.” Within that definition we also find the root of “cultivate,” meaning “to foster growth”, or, “to improve by labor, care, or study; to encourage.” These old definitions remind us that our firm cultures are organic, living things that must be cultivated and maintained—NOT imposed and enforced. As an avid backyard gardener, I like this idea.

My #weekend #healthandwellness post is on how important environmental factors are for #health, #wellness, and even survival. As an example, I offer the attached green and red shoots of our resident bougainvillea plant. A native of South America, some species thrive in the lower deserts of the U.S., but at a mile high we are apparently at the extreme boundary of this species. I bought the plant and planted it in our front yard in 2020 during our big Covid project -- complete new yard and garden. During the first year we had growth by mid summer and blooms and bracts (beautiful red leaves) by early September, but each year it has been later, and then last fall it didn't begin to grow from the roots up until late Sept, with just 3-4 red leaves before Oct frost. We obviously had hoped for more like a 6 month season in a full healthy plant, not one week struggling for its life. So I decided to take the risk of transplanting into a large pot and bringing it inside. Some bougainvillea can make a beautiful large indoor plant in the right conditions. We have an especially sunny breakfast room shared by our older dog inbetween the kitchen and garage. Especially sunny in winter due to large window facing south. Betsy researched it and found that pruning was needed, and then 3 weeks later noticed new growth, in the middle of winter of course. It was a good reminder of environmental factors, which can serve as a metaphor for work and life. Are you a sensative bougainvillea that thrives in hot sun with bright red leaves? A cactus that needs little external assistance other than seasonal rains? Or perhaps a rugged bristlecone pine that thrives at high altitude and lives a long life in brutally cold high winds and deep snow? In organizational management, corporate cultures represent most of the environment beyond industry and geography. I have observed many people complaining over the past year or two on LinkedIn, obviously very unhappy with their environment, and naively thinking they can change corporate culture. As someone who has led turn-arounds, please trust me it's difficult even with the full support of owners/investors. If you are in a company for example like big tech where investors couldn't be happier, but you are miserable--particularly with ethics and toxic behavior, my advice is don't beat your head against a multi-trillion dollar wall. Move on and find a more hospitable environment for your species. It may be in a different company, industry, in a non-profit, or government. Some find it necessary to change states/cities, and some find it beneficial to change country locations (many in my network). #career #culture
