Our Winchester, Virginia plant hosted professors and students from the University of Notre Dame and Clemson University to set up and pour specimens for the Precast Buckling-Restrained Braced (BRB) Frame Research Project. These were some of the most complicated pieces that our drafters, engineers, and plant associates have seen to date. The level of care shown by all, including our two Winchester summer interns who were able to be involved in this unique work, was second to none. After months of meetings, analytical work, developing drawings, lots of work to refine the details, and securing the materials needed, we successfully produced these frame specimens that will be tested at the University of Notre Dame in the coming months.The Precast BRB Frames research is a major, multi-year research project funded by the National Science Foundation, PCI, and many precast producers in conjunction with University of Notre Dame, Clemson University, and University of California San Diego to develop and codify a new seismic force-resisting system. The research consists of analytical work at Clemson, laboratory testing at UND, and shake table testing at UCSD. This major research project was born out of three PCI Jenny Fellowships that were awarded by the PCI R&D Council to Notre Dame and Clemson. Through the collaboration of those teams and advisory groups, we are seeing code changing research which is exciting to all who are involved. #thankyou #leaders #precastconcrete #educators #metromont

In the meantime, we have 2 faculty meetings on hold, pending the dean’s office to calendarize. It is more important to promote the deans of engineering and the chancellor’s agenda, through a media tour with other engineering departments, offering space and resources, in exchange for their support to dismantle this department and later on the ICOM program. With the support of the chancellor and commitment of the Associate Deans, and with no metrics and discussions with the faculty and staff affected, it is evident their incapacity to execute as administrators. This is an example of a dictatorial administration. No respect for processes and university governance.
Wednesday's comment on the decline of our institution, the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. During these weeks, something really ignominious has been orchestrated in our College of Engineering. Our department, Engineering Science & Materials, has been assailed by direct and under-the-table aggravations indicating our dismantling. We, the faculty, were not consulted by those concocting this plan, i.e., the Dean's office members. Instead, they opted to call for meetings in all the other Engineering departments and present there their mischievous plan. There has been no assessment of our performance that merits such a confabulatory decision. Since joining my department, I have been the PI of three major NSF projects that brought $2.7 million, $4.2 million, and $5.04 million. We have an NSF CAREER awardee among our professors. We are among the departments that attend our campus's largest number of students. We host the only Materials Science and Engineering graduate program in Puerto Rico (and one of the few in a Hispanic-serving institution). What did we do wrong? Please join us in our attempt to get an honest answer from our dean and our chancellor.
