Recruiting the Next Generation of Police Officers Recruiting qualified police officers in 2024 continues to be one of the most significant challenges facing law enforcement agencies across the country. As departments work to rebuild trust, prioritize diversity, and adapt to the evolving expectations of the communities we serve, the task of finding dedicated candidates has become increasingly complex. We’ve tried to think creatively—whether it’s enhanced outreach programs, updated hiring incentives, or expanding the use of social media—but it still feels like a steep climb. To my colleagues in law enforcement and beyond: What’s working for your agency? Are there innovative strategies or programs that have helped you successfully recruit and retain officers in this difficult climate? I’d love to hear your feedback. Let’s learn from one another to meet this challenge head-on. #LawEnforcement #Recruitment #CommunityPolicing #PublicSafety #ToPost

I have written extensively on fixing law enforcement recruiting on my Substack https://lnkd.in/exTP7NkE. I strongly recommend the work of Dr. Travis Yates on his Substack (https://lnkd.in/ew_qi22w) as he recognizes what needs to get fixed in order to get the necessary recruits for the next generation of law enforcement. One of the key distractions to avoid at this point is drop the nonsense of rebuilding trust. Cops have taken a credibility hit but remain one of the most trusted professions. Verify whether this is true or not, don't take my word for it. Extract your self from the rabbit hole of diversity. If your power was out for days, you wouldn't care who was driving the bucket truck. 30 X 30 is an excellent example of this - even if your agency is 30% female by 2030, no one will know unless you tell them. I'll be publishing an article on this topic in the next day or so and I'll be sharing some ideas from Dr. Yates and Mike Forehand of Police Hiring Solutions. Maybe if we learn from the investments of the private sector, we will have the courage to make the changes necessary to succeed.

Law enforcement agencies across the United States are experiencing a significant increase in staffing since 2020. According to recent Police Executive Research Forum survey, many departments have resorted to increased salaries, hiring bonuses, and changing testing protocols to attract more applicants. However, the biggest factor contributing to this trend is the perception of the job and support from the community and elected officials. This positive trend is crucial to ensuring the safety and security of our communities. Let's continue to support our efforts to hire and retain qualified law enforcement officers and work together to build a stronger and safer society. 👮♂️ 👮♀ #lawenforcement #policing #hiring #PERF #crime #recruitment #retention #police Check out the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eYnDNir6

My thoughts on small police agency recruitment. Our agency managed 9 years without a vacancy. How can we make smaller agency positions more appealing? Does the quality of life within the agency or the community play a role? My opinion on Small Law Enforcement Agency Advantages/Disadvantages Disadvantages: Fewer Advancement Opportunities: Slower career progression and fewer specialized assignments. Increased Workload: Officers juggle multiple roles, from patrol to admin. Less Backup in Emergencies: Fewer officers mean less immediate support. Limited Specialized Units: Broader duties, fewer specialized teams like SWAT or K9. Advantages: Tight-Knit Community: Stronger bonds with residents and more community impact. Broader Experience: Officers gain diverse skills from varied duties. Close Relationships: A familial atmosphere with colleagues. More Immediate Impact: Individual contributions stand out. Direct Access to Leadership: Better communication with decision-makers. #LawEnforcement #SmallAgencyLife #CommunityPolicing
