Building community is so important to me. As I consider how to build more resilient communities, I want to share what I do in my own neighborhood. I live in a community that is older than many of the neighborhoods nearby but that has less accumulated wealth, so we tend to feel like outcasts. This results in neighbors acting out in a variety of ways, but I always try to see them as children who are searching for what they needed as they grew up, and that helps me to love them. Here is what I do: -I host a yearly Halloween party at our community building, with "Pin the bandages on the mummy", "Decorate your own grave" (pudding, crushed oreos, Milanos for headstones, and paper and markers to make the epitaph as they eat), a spooky music playlist (ALL the versions of Monster Mash are on that bad boy!), and more! -We organize a yearly clean-up of public spaces to promote a sense of shared pride among residents and to get neighbors talking. -A yearly block party where everyone brings out their grills, tables, etc. to basically have a tailgate-style party with people wandering about, trying the goodies their neighbors have made, and making friends. -I force my partner to be a part of the HOA (sorry, fam, I just can't handle that group!) What are your ways to build community where you live? What do you suggest we do to continue bridging the gap between neighbors (a good natural disaster always brings us together, but I'd love to build that community without the terror of flooding and the inconvenience of weeks without power as I live in Hurricane Country)?

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock." - Matthew 7:24-25 In our mission to provide safe and affordable housing, we at Habitat for Humanity are reminded of the importance of a strong foundation, both in the homes we build and in the lives of those we serve. We believe in not just building houses, but building homes rooted in faith and resilience. Just as a sturdy house withstands the fiercest storms, our commitment to God's teachings empowers us to weather life's challenges with unwavering strength. By providing families with stable housing, we at Habitat not only offer them shelter, but also a foundation upon which they can build brighter futures. Our work is more than just construction; it's about building communities where everyone has a place to call home. Through the unwavering support of our volunteers, donors, and partners, we're able to lay the groundwork for a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Together, let's continue to build on the solid foundation of God's Word and Habitat's mission, ensuring that every family has the opportunity to thrive in a home filled with love, security, and hope. 📍4103 N. Small businesses that previously didn’t require a social media manager will likely now need help communicating next steps to their clients as they navigate the slow road to recovery. 🌟 Tuesday NEWSDAY: Community Action at Urban Wellness 🌟 This week at Urban Wellness, we’ve been staying active in our local and extended communities: 🏢 Supporting Local Business Owners: A number of our staff members have been volunteering with @palenquelsna to distribute resources and information to local businesses, helping ensure that individuals threatened by ICE know their rights. 🔥 Wildfire Relief Efforts: We’re organizing to send firefighter t-shirts to a veteran in LA who lost their home to the wildfires. Our hearts are with everyone impacted, and we’re staying informed about relief efforts to find ways to contribute. 🎨 Vision Boarding for Resilience: Leadership gathered for a vision boarding exercise to reflect on resilience amidst tough times. While some themes felt heavy, we also found ways to honor hope and creativity as tools for navigating adversity. We’re so grateful to the local businesses supporting social justice causes and to everyone in our community working toward a better future. We know it’s not always easy, but together, we’ll keep showing up in the best ways we can. #TuesdayNEWSDAY #UrbanWellness #CommunityAction #KnowYourRights #WildfireRelief #ResilienceInAdversity

Our hearts are heavy as we watch the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles unfold. Lives have been upended, cherished homes reduced to ashes, and entire communities displaced. It’s a stark reminder of just how precious the concept of “home” truly is—not just the walls and roof that shelter us, but the sense of belonging, safety, and connection that defines our communities. For those of us in real estate, the idea of home is at the center of everything we do. It’s where life happens—where we share meals, celebrate milestones, and build memories. To see so many lose that sanctuary is deeply heartbreaking. Yet, in the face of this devastation, the strength and resilience of community are shining brightly. First responders, volunteers, and organizations are stepping up, risking their own safety and dedicating their resources to help those in need. They embody the spirit of togetherness that turns a collection of houses into a community. We are appreciate you!! If you're feeling compelled to help, our latest article on GoWithLocal.com/Journal includes a vetted and comprehensive list of ways to get involved. #LosAngelesWildfires #CommunitySupport #TogetherWeRebuild
