In our last issue of #WaterWire, we delved into how Waterfront Alliance's WEDG (Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines) rating system can be woven into policy concerning #waterfrontdesign. From master planning to large urban infrastructure waterfront developments, WEDG can be applicable to different projects and property types. We outlined how WEDG has already been implemented into policy, and where more opportunities exist. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dScJcZkn

If this design-led approach is the future of infrastructure, I’m all in. For me, the Elizabeth Line winning the Stirling Prize is a recognition of the complexity of creating a system that fundamentally impacts the way people experience the city. It can open opportunities for jobs and offer sustainable transport opportunities but can also have unintended consequences of land values impacting local communities. With the Stirling Prize, however, we should celebrate the vision and accessible experience this multidisciplinary team has brought to reality over many years. What do you think? Thanks to Architects’ Journal and Richard Waite for asking me my opinion here. https://lnkd.in/eP2CSSS3 (Image screenshot from AJ website) #stirlingprize #architecture #planning #infrastructure #cities #urbanism #crossrail

In May we hosted a masterclass, 'Improving Energy Efficiency in Traditional Buildings' at the Irish Georgian Society City Assembly House in Dublin. The masterclass aligned with the recently published Irish Government Guidance Document on the topic, and the speakers included leading experts in energy conservation, heritage, and architecture. In our video, key speakers and attendees share invaluable tips on retrofitting #traditionalbuildings. Their insights focus on achieving energy efficiency upgrades while maintaining the architectural integrity and character of historic structures. In the process of upgrading #historicbuildings, we also allow for vacant properties to be repurposed and occupied once again. There are grants available to support these types of projects: 🟢 Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant: Up to €50,000 for converting a vacant property into a home or rental. 🟢 Derelict Property Top-up Grant: Additional €20,000 for properties that are structurally unsound, bringing the total grant to €70,000. 🟢 Traditional Farm Buildings Grant: ranging from €4000 to €30,000 covering up to 75% of the conservation work. Applications for 2024 closed on March 27th 2024. 🟢 Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS): Up to €50,000 for custodians and owners of protected structures. 🟢 You can also contact the SEAI to find out what other grants are available. With the insights shared in our video and the use of suitable materials for protecting the integrity of such buildings, we can reduce the building's energy use and be a step closer to meeting our climate targets. https://loom.ly/jCe2wms 👉 'Improving Energy Efficiency in Traditional Buildings' guidance document: https://loom.ly/XxIDmIs 👉 'Caring for our Vernacular Heritage' guidance document: https://loom.ly/qHPv67s 👉 'A Living Tradition' guidance document: https://loom.ly/LqHHYLo 👉 'Built Heritage Investment Scheme' guidance document: https://loom.ly/kiA76Kg #EnergyEfficiency #Retrofit #SustainableBuilding #IrishArchitecture #HeritageBuildings

We design living organisms and like us, they need specific requirements to thrive and survive! The success of green infrastructure depends on our ability to carefully plan and construct it. Integrating blue, green, and grey infrastructure can often be challenging, but it's a necessary requirement to produce an environment-centred design. Pairing with industry experts is key in optimising soil, drainage and irrigation requirements, and with detailed attention to these we can create sustainable vibrant, long term landscapes.
Construction Detailing for Green Infrastructure 🌿 Successful green infrastructure is dependent on careful and considered construction detailing. Construction detailing of green infrastructure elements involves selecting appropriate materials, preparing robust specifications, and implementing techniques that prioritise ecological benefit. Even components that seem simply, like a planter bed, require a thorough understanding of drainage options and soil volume to set them up for success. Join our conversation series, The Living City, exploring the importance and benefits of City Greening initiatives. https://lnkd.in/g6gm62BP Matthew Franzmann Julie Slifirski Brenton Beggs Andrew Kyriacou Mark Sheppard Peter Hillman Kelsy Pearce #CityShaper #CityGreening #SustainableCities #UrbanEnvironment #GreenSpaces #LandscapeArchitecture #UrbanDesign

New York City’s development approval process is highly regulated and involves multiple steps to ensure compliance with zoning laws, building codes, and environmental regulations. Developers typically need to obtain approvals from various city agencies, including the Department of Buildings (DOB) & NYC Department of City Planning DCP. The process may include public review through the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP), especially for rezonings or large-scale developments, making it a comprehensive and often lengthy process. Learn what you can expect in our latest guide 👉 https://lnkd.in/ekUT72ZS #NYC #Zoning #Buildingcodes #RealEstate #Development #guide

Valuing Green Infrastructure: a landscape, health and economic perspective Historically, the link between green infrastructure (plants, wetlands, forests, gardens, parks etc) and human health is the foundation of many societies. Contemporary Western societies are returning back to this relationship. Yet, while many disciplines including landscape architecture and the broader built environment, health and economics are independently forming these conclusions there is an opportunity for greater collaboration to maximize the benefits that green infrastructure provides people and place. In early 2023, Standards Australia released SA HB 214:2023 Urban Green Infrastructure - Planning and decision framework to kick start the conversation. Please come and join a discussion at the Herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne on Tuesday 10 September with key speakers from the landscape, health and economic fields talk about their perspectives on the value of green infrastructure and what a more integrated approach to planning, design, construction and management might include. #AILA #GreenInfrastructure #sustainability #landscapearchitecture #ParksVictoria #DoctorsfortheEnvironment #universityofMelbourne #environmentaleconomics #StandardsAustralia #UniversityofTechnologySydney #Merribek #

The Arcadis 2024 International Construction Costs report calculates an index using 20 building types, such as residential, commercial and public sector, and takes into account #construction costs and market conditions. The results? Three American cities are listed in the top 10 as most expensive in the world for construction. They are: * City of New York is #5 * City and County of San Francisco is #6 * City of Philadelphia is #7 Fortunately, using #modern #buildingmaterials like #EIFS with Drainage (e.g. Exterior Insulation Finish Systems) are a very tangible way for #architects, #designers, #engineers, #developers, #buildingowners and #governmentofficials to control #costs in #newconstruction and #renovation. But don't take our word for it. Information compiled by RSMeans Data from Gordian, the authoritative subscription-based construction costs firm, shows that the installed cost of EIFS are significantly less than other, #heavyweight cladding options like #curtainwall, #stone, #precast and #brick. In fact, the latest, 2Q24 data shows that walls clad in brick veneer with #steel backup are 68% more expensive than similar EIFS walls on 3-story, 6-story, and 15-story newly constructed apartment buildings on a national basis. Other cost highlights can be found at the site of the EIFS Industry Members Association (EIMA) association right here https://lnkd.in/ekQwU-3v Since the "I" in "EIFS" stands for insulation, it is no surprise that EIFS have always met the continuous insulation requirements (e.g. ASHRAE 90.1) mandated by the International Code Council's International Energy Conservation Code ever since they came into effect in 2013. Here's a case study published by Habitat Magazine that shows EIFS in a #retrofit application in Brooklyn, https://lnkd.in/dGrwcrPV With more finishes than ever before, one can see some great examples of EIFS projects from all over #northamerica at EIMA's photo gallery. https://lnkd.in/ddjUwqxS www.eima.com #eima #architecture #design #constructioncosts #financialvalue #buildingperformance #sustainability #energyefficiency
