The Department of the Navy is at a pivotal moment in its modernization journey. With the establishment of the Software Modernization and Innovation Organization (SMIO), we have an opportunity to harness the wave of innovation that’s transforming operations and driving mission success. But success isn’t just about creating new organizations—it’s about addressing critical gaps and aligning how information, processes, and decisions flow across the enterprise.
From my perspective, the key lies in unifying and streamlining existing efforts, eliminating fragmentation, and ensuring teams have the clarity and agility to act with precision. The SMIO has the potential to serve as a force multiplier, simplifying systems, fostering collaboration, and ensuring innovation translates into operational outcomes that matter.
This is our chance to drive meaningful change, focus our efforts, and ensure we’re building an agile, cohesive, and forward-leaning Navy that’s ready for the challenges ahead. The momentum is here—it’s on us to channel it effectively.
On December 6, 2024, the DON established SMIO within ASN RD&A to drive software modernization and deliver mission-focused capabilities faster.
SMIO will optimize the Software Factory Ecosystem and advance DevSecOps collaboration to ensure Sailors, Marines, and Civilians have the tools they need at the speed of relevance. Together, we’re building a future where innovation meets mission readiness.
