I am a man that loves quote and love to be quoted. Good quotes carry snippets of foresight, insight and hindsight for successful career and living. Several quotes relating to Quantity Surveying profession have inspired me at one time or the other, to learn, re-learn and unlearn. However, none still inspires me than the foremost quote that I became familiar with as an undergraduate studying Quantity Surveying. Here’s the quote below: “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it – lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, “This man began to build and was not able to finish’?” Luke 14:28-30 This quote has inspired me to see the need to sit down first and count the cost for both personal projects and other people’s project. There is the cost of time, materials, resources, labour, etc. to always take into cognizance before embarking on any project, desire or endeavour. For me, it is good to under-promise and over-deliver, than to over promise and under-deliver. Counting the costs before agreeing to execute any work will help to avoid the later. This quote in Luke 14:28-30 has been adopted as the bed-rock, deciding factor and value system in my Quantity Surveying practice and before I accept any offer or make any major decision (career, relationship, business, etc.) What about you? Have you ever wondered why some professions require licensure and some others don't?   No, I mean, have you asked why it is even important to seek professional advice?   This question popped into my mind during my solitude. Then another part of me gave this response:    "It reflects that you have officially been given the license to nurture and protect lives. Just like a medical doctor does, you have the license to ensure that lives are protected through shelter from adverse weather conditions."  I was wondering why some disciplines do not require licensure, and it dawned on me that most professions that require licensure have an effect on human lives in one way or another. It dwells on the health and safety of lives, properties, or anything that threatens the public.   In the medical profession, for example, licensing ensures practitioners meet certain standards of education and competency to safeguard patients' well-being.    Similarly, in law, licensing ensures lawyers are qualified to provide legal advice and representation.    While in the building industry, licenses ensure that contractors, architects, and other consultants have the necessary skills to design and construct safe and compliant structures, protecting both occupants and the public from potential hazards.     So the next time you are considering building a house or a public building, endeavour to consult the right professional(s) [architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, etc.] for that project, as you are handing over the authority of your health, safety, or wellbeing and that of others to those professionals. #architecture #architectureschool #architects #students #technologists #graduates #associates #architectscorner #publichealth #safety

The post below is very interesting but in my opinion will only partly solve the problem. By reading news reports and by obviously following the news it is clear that the structural design was awful and completely illogical. There was simply no #structuralmechanics applied which hence led to collapse and that fateful fatality. The main problem in Malta is that many developers use a Perit who often assumes control of the project. This Perit can be specialised in architecture or structural engineering. What compounds matters more is that the University of Malta is also producing structural engineers that can opt out of various structural theoretical subjects. All in all this means that there are very few pure structural engineers on the island compared to the full amount of #Periti. I think that the country needs: 💡 To separate completely the roles of the Structural/Civil Engineer and the Planning and Design architect. 💡 There should be 2 permits, one for the planning and design issued by the Planning Authority and 1 for construction issued by the Building Construction Authority. These should be managed by a design architect and structural/civil engineer respectively. 💡 A structural engineer should not be able to opt out of any structural mechanics modules at University and it might also make sense for Civil Engineering to fall under the Faculty of Engineering as is done in top Universities abroad such as Imperial College London. I think that through the above many problems such as those mentioned in the article will be solved. It is of paramount importance that as buildings have become more complex that competent people are managing them. It also no longer makes sense for the Planning permit to be the all important one. The Building Construction Authority has now adequate resources to be able to issue its own permits which will be in force during construction. #construction #civilengineers #structuralengineers #safety
