At D3 Custom Cabinets, we are always looking for ways to improve and get better every day. An example is that I added a drop-down calendar and an automatic email alert in our shipping schedule that saves time and notifies those involved of a change. As we work with new customers, the importance of our design-build practices really shine. We received a service call at a job site we had never worked in. The existing warehouse DF had been hit by a fork lift due to its placement in a high-traffic area of the facility. We have been tasked with replacing the damaged cabinet; better design of its placement would have eliminated the tangible cost of the cabinet repair. In addition, any device(s) that are active from that cabinet will not be operable during the repair. Time = Money in the fulfillment world. Are you using design-build practices to ensure your facility is risk-proof, both now and in the future?

Ratchet straps on a cabinet is a first for me. I cannot stress the importance of proper design-build practices during initial construction. These costs could have been largely avoided. Design-Build-Maintain. That is our process, and one that we stand by. A couple of examples of “compliant” but poor design encountered recently: 1. Stuck in an NHS car park for 15 minutes because there is only a single exit barrier and any one problem with ticket/payment leads to gridlock. 2. A family member stranded in their over 60s accommodation because almost unbelievably there is only one elevator and it broke down. 3. In another NHS car park, the pedestrian exit is located right next to a vehicle ramp giving rise to high conflicts and stoppages to vehicle flow. Most standards are written to consider minimum requirements, but good design governance should put in an extra step of defining the operating conditions from first principles to generate design and operating requirements taking into account people, technology, layout, maintenance and procedure interactions.
