"The foil is key to breaking the record" - explains Benoit Gaudiot, COO and SP80 kite pilot. The updated hydrofoil design – according to calculations - prevents instability from cavitation, enabling a sailboat to exceed the current speed record. "This is a crucial step for us", Xavier Lepercq, CTO of SP80 emphasizes. "In the world of sailing, the fastest boats are all confronted with a physical underwater phenomenon: cavitation. This is comparable to the sound barrier in aviation. To exceed 60 knots, we need foil shapes that are very different from what we can see today in the America's Cup and in the sailing world; the constraints are not the same. If our boat can overcome this barrier, we can not only rival Vestas Sailrocket II but surpass it."

High-speed watercraft have as much in common with airplanes as they do with boats. After all, some are meant to generate lift and rise partially out of the water on long hydrofoils that minimize drag. But one Swiss group’s attempt at breaking the wind-powered speed record takes a different approach to aerodynamic lift.
The SP80 is no ordinary sailboat. In fact, it doesn’t even have a sail in the strictest sense. Instead, the craft attaches to a specially designed parachute like the ones used by kite-surfers. This “kite” can catch faster wind currents than a sail that stays close to the water’s surface. The boat’s aerodynamics, meanwhile, have to work hard to keep it from getting dragged into the air.
The craft itself has a narrow fuselage that follows the area rule and is flanked by a pair of pontoons for stability. It’s largely constructed of Kevlar to prevent splintering in the event of a crash. It’s operated by two pilots: one to steer and one to manage the kite. The goal is to hit 80 knots and shatter the standing sailboat speed record of 65 knots.
Remarkably, they don’t need an 80-knot tailwind to do this. By capturing the wind and sailing at an oblique angle, high-performance sailboats’ speed becomes the sum of two vectors. Sailing speed is thus all about the relative angle between the wind and the boat’s motion. SP80’s team expects to reach their 80-knot goal on just 30 knots worth of true windspeed.
Though the testing has been promising, the SP80 team has not yet made an attempt on the record. When they do, we suspect both the boating and flying world – including us at Luminary Air Group – will be watching with a keen eye. #sailboat#highspeedwatercraft

They proved you can scale a Lake District Mountain (3100ft Helveylln) in 3mins 30 seconds, despite very poor visibility that would have grounded a HEMS Helicopter. The Mountain Rescue foot response is over 70 minutes typically. The route was 1.2 miles and 2200ft of height gain.
This is the latest in a series of Paramedic Response Exercises to prove capability in parallel with training up real Paramedics to provide first response Critical Care in hard to reach geographies. Cardiac, breathing or blood loss cases are time critical and require rapid stabilisation to buy time for evacuation. This system, akin to the rapid response of a Paramedic on a motorbike in an urban environment, will be the difference between life and death for many critical cases.

Tandem Airfoil Flairboats as efficient wing-in-ground-effect crafts Type A.
Longlife experience in constructing, testing and consulting of this highspeed crafts by inventor and engineer Guenther Joerg.
Ground effect vehicles are in use. Indeed there are a few of them and their occurence is rare. In fact ground effect vehicles have enormous economic and ecological advantages over conventional ships. The flexible use of a Tandem Wing in Ground Effect vehicle in swimming-gliding or flairing mode makes it usable almost anywhere.
Video shows Tandem Airfoil Flairboat as a universally applicable vehicle during a rescue mission with explanations from the designer.

No #foiler will be as revolutionary as a #groundEffect boat.... Especially when it will be a #sailboat : https://lnkd.in/e3MpVRZF
Foiler racing satisfies the egos of pretentious competitors who want to pass themselves off as environmentalists.
But sponsored technological advances must serve as prototypes for the needs of the general public... Otherwise they remain #useless expensive #gadgets for self-centered rich kids.
like insane IMOCA boats hopping along on a single foil (as said the only man to have won the Vendée Globe twice: https://lnkd.in/exNgH4SU )
If only the Vendée Globe had yachts racing on 2 or 3 foils like #AC75, and even smarter and safer using:
Foils #stabilized by electronics (it’s called an #imu and is used on every single jet plane and rocket since 1942)
The imu foil stabilizer is not embarked, only to make the public believe that they are witnessing a dangerous gladiatorial combat… like 2000 years ago in a media circus in Rome (when bread and games were given).
What a pitiful spectacle America's Cup is becoming (with electric boats that need to plug after every regatta & that are kept unstable just to give videos a feeling of risk, to keep the audience until the next commercial break!
Even worse for current Imoca boats that no one will be crazy enough in 20 years' time to buy ; because nobody wants to walk on all fours (like babies) and sleep with a seatbelt. https://lnkd.in/ej4t62mm

#resss2 Redefine Cruising by Setting Sails : Chapter 2, Level control for a ship with a sail device The invention relates to a ship with a hull and with a sail device which has a telescopic mast with a telescopic axis and can be integrated into a support system, a rescue system and an energy system of the ship with a hydrodynamic level control for the longitudinal, transverse and vertical axis of the ship. The ship has a center of buoyancy, a center of gravity and a metacenter, and is designed with an underwater hull shaped according to hydrodynamic aspects. The underwater hull connects a forecastle to a stern with a keel and has a lower bulkhead deck formed by a double bottom. The hull has longitudinal and transverse bulkhead walls which, together with a plurality of decks, enclose a plurality of vertical, spaced-apart air chambers of a height which form a honeycomb structure and extend parallel to the vertical axis from a lower bulkhead deck to a watertight sealable main deck as an upper deck, substantially over the entire length of the hull along the longitudinal axis and are designed to accommodate the sailing gear. The level of the longitudinal, transverse and vertical axis of the ship is regulated by means of hydrodynamically effective outboard wings that can be extended on the starboard and port sides with a three-part variable wing profile, which are designed for this purpose together with a dynamically displaceable water ballast, the telescopic axis of the telescopic mast installed in an air chamber is always aligned vertically during sailing operation of the ship, whereby the sailing device can be extended beyond the main deck by means of the telescopic mast with a height corresponding to the height of an air chamber in order to enable temporary sailing operation of the ship. The ship according to the invention can be designed according to its respective function as a cargo, passenger, war or work ship.

The Catesby Tunnel is one of only two facilities like it in the world – and the only one open to the public. Last used by trains in 1966, it was repurposed in 2020 into a state-of-the-art aerodynamic testing site.
This 2.7km-long, perfectly straight tunnel, with sealed ends, no wind, and a smooth tarmac surface, creates the ultimate environment for precision testing.
When we were asked to support a customer there, we jumped at the chance. Using our Aerodrome wireless lap triggers at either end of the test section, we achieved millisecond-accurate timing, enabling unprecedented repeatability in aerodynamic drag measurements within this remarkable facility.
