Always happy to share a story about Tinos, one of my favourite Cycladic islands, which some very good friends introduced me to many years ago, revealing its unique character. One of the most fascinating trademarks of the island are the iconic #dovecotes. Even if they also exist in other parts of #Cyclades, it is here, in the hinterland of #Tinos, that these elaborate structures stand out in the landscape, like small castles out of a fairy tale - amazingly elegant works of art that combine aesthetics with an absolutely functional purpose, an important means of livelihood though the years. After all, doves had always had their own place in the world -in myth, history, religion, art and everyday life. The oldest in Tinos dates back to around 1700, and since they are scattered all over the island, there had been some uncertainty as to their exact number. Thanks to the systematic work of Manthos Prelorentzos, author of the book “The Complete Listing of the Dovecotes of Tinos” (first edition, 2020), which lasted about five years, we now have a picture of both their number and their geographical location. Some years ago, when I first talked to Manthos, he had listed 924 dovecotes. Now, since his work is ongoing, final list has risen to 961. And all these, on an island with 8,000-9,000 permanent inhabitants, as if to say that there is one dovecote for every 10 inhabitants. And though it may sound like an exaggeration, it’s true: in Tinos, every dovecote is unique! As these architectural masterpieces are examples of both artistic excellence and cultural value, all initiatives to preserve or restore them are crucial. Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung, defined archetypes as the universal, inborn models of people, behaviors, and personalities that play a role in influencing human behavior. Franck de las Mercedes painted people who have ties or reside in upper Manhattan and assigned each an archetypal role based on their life narrative, occupation or calling. Painted during his residency at Art on the Ave, in Inwood, each work is a visual gateway exploring the complexities of the collective unconscious, and the process of active imagination.   By tapping into archetypal roles and reformulating them as contemporary figures, 'Uptown Arquetípico' can be viewed as a mirror for our human condition. It is a contemplative series developed to acquaint the viewer with the realm of archetypes, and a path for discovery or interaction with a latent archetype within. Each artwork conveys a message that serves as a key to unlock the inner strength needed to conquer the challenges of a fast-paced life.
