Did you know that the largest genome sequenced to date is that of the African lungfish Protopterus annectens and contains 40 billion letters? While these are distributed over 17 chromosomes, the 100 million letters of the ciliate Oxytricha trifallax are distributed over 16,000 chromosomes. These extreme cases and data for a further > 50 k genomes can be found on the newly designed search platform "mendle.org" by GOENOMICS. I was particularly interested in digging into RNAi R&D, and why he has worked with startups to develop new RNA molecules and delivery tools, rather than the industry leader leading the charge. Here's what he said: "Let’s take the case of City Therapeutics. We just raised $135 million to focus on this new type of RNAi trigger molecule. At Alnylam, we would never commit $135 million to one idea like that. Right? I mean, we’d have to spread it out across a larger number of opportunities. And so that’s the beauty of some of these entrepreneurial, focused efforts that you have out there." Over the past year, I have been working to launch MabLab alongside my Co-Founder, Skye Lam. Together, we are working to build a 5-in-1 test strip to screen for the five deadliest lacing agents in recreational drugs. Although more than 109,000 people in the United States overdose on laced drugs every single year, founders and investors typically turn a blind eye from being involved in the harm reduction space. We are the complete opposite. Our team is passionate about decreasing the stigma surrounding recreational drug usage, especially in marginalized communities where the majority of startups overlook. Busy days here, yesterday and today. Going from San Francisco to San Diego had the chance to meet Shane Christensen doing a fellowship in the Institute of the Americas and with converging interests with ABIQUIFI. We shared our thoughts on topics related to how can California companies be closer to Brazilian companies and potentially increase commercial interaction related to production of APIs, right on ABIQUIFI's wheelhouse. We should have greater insights in the coming days and give some steps forward during the BIO event in June. As the saying goes, "when in Rome, do as the romans do". For that, I called up local entrepreneur, Rajib Biswas, PhD to discuss a bit about his biotech ambitions at CytoHub, Inc. and discuss how the ecosystem is holding up from his perspective. Recently, his team increased with experienced people such as David DiGiusto. Great move. Surely, he is invited to our Startup Day on June 4th (during BIO Convention) to mingle with investors and biotech companies raising capital. Connecting with Darryl Kirsh was a great positive surprise and a welcomed one. I believe his appetite for unorthodox deals and his inclination to biotech makes this a really good match with our ambitions for the startup program we are currently running. Let's keep things moving ahead. Finally, connecting with Christie Marcella at @Connect was exicitng. The strong community being built in San Diego has a lot to thank this team working for over 30 years with entreprenuers and local companies/mentors.
